Glad it wasn't mine. Sorry Joel, I know you were hoping mine would be the first to lose the fight with gravity. Didn't get it on video, but took a couple of pictures after the fact. Damage was nothing out of the ordinary with the exception of one thing - the swash. The inner out and out rings had pulled apart. To be honest, I haven't seen this before. I wasn't watching the heli went in, but Joel says he lost control of it. He was in an inverted hover a couple inches of the deck and when he went to give it negative collective nothing happened for a second and then it went down. He thinks the swash may have come apart at that time hence his loss of collective control.

Here are the pics:

Out of all the crashes I have witnessed and been part of, I must admit I have not seen a swash seperate like that either.

That'll buff right out. A bit of duct tape and you'll be back up in no time.

You can buff with duct tape? Is there anything it can't do?

There should be a lot of them flying by now and I haven't heard of any other problems with the swash, so this is probably just a one off.

The tail gears still look good. How were the front output gears?
Going flybarless doesn't remove the swash so this could've happened even without a flybar.

Well, just talked with Joel - so far damage is pretty extensive. Here's what I remember:

- Blades
- Hatori SB-19 muffler
- Main shaft
- Spindle
- Flybar
- Seesaw
- flanged bearings in headblock for seesaw are destroyed
- swash
- blade grip extension
- mixing arm
- boom
- torque tube
- long tail control pushrod
- canopy
- miscellaneous links and pushrods

There no doubt are items I've forgotten or which haven't been discover yet. He's figuring between $750 and $800 in damage. I know he would be much more comfortable with the amount of the damage had the crash been spectacular - but this was a pretty mild crash all things considered. Went in in long grass from a stationary hover a couple inches up. In contrast I plowed my Synergy in today on the head in the same grass when I didn't pull out of an inverted tail slide in time. Much more impressive crash and I escaped with under $200 in damage including blades. I've certainly had my share of expensive crashes, but usually they were much more exciting to watch and I felt like I got m money's worth. Every crash is different of course but seeing the damage to Joel's after such an anti-climactic crash, I'm definitely not looking forward to putting mine in. I have a sneaky suspicion that after he rebuilds it there may be an Aurora up for sale and there may be someone in the market for another N9.

Oh, BTW, carcrasher, all of the gears, front and back, are fine.

Yes every crash is different. How soon you cut your engine decides how much the damage will cost.

I crashed my N9 7 times, the most expensive crash cost about 350 including blades. Maybe having crashed too many times on my trex 450 (about 50 crashes) it teaches me to cut the engine so fast so that the heli does not even touch the ground yet.

Sorry for your loss Joel!

Joel has a lot of experience crashing too. His throttle hold finger has got a lot of exercise over the years.

I'm sure he'll pipe up here when he gets back to work on Tuesday.

Sorry to see what happened to him.
We never had a swash come apart like that. My only guess is that that particular one didn't get flared at the bottom during production otherwise it's pretty much imposible to separate them inner and outer rings. From the little bit I can see in the pics that seems like it.

I need to get that part for inspection. Please have Joel PM me at the AvantRC.com site. We'll take care of him.

Augusto.

An observation!!!!!
In the pics 1 & 2 it looks to me as though the top mast bearing in fitted the wrong way up? and the mast stopper has ground its way into the bg,n block.???

I see that too, but what it looks to me, is that the bearing has popped out of the block a just a little bit, pushing the shaft collar upwards along for the ride.

I think if the top bearing block was upside down, you would know right away as soon as you tightened down the shaft collar.

"El Dooderino" if you're not into the whole brevity thing.

I'm pretty sure that what you've pointed to in that photo is part of the swash that broken free and fell down around the collar.
