e-BEAM Beam E4 > I found the BEAM weak link...

After a minor rebuild from my first ever real life tic-tocs (why don't the helis float like they do on the sim - all cyclic servos stripped - a first for me in several crashes, the usual flybar, feathering, and mainshaft replaced) and motor/pinion upgrade (scorpion 2221-8 v2 w/13t pinion), today on the third flight I had a new set of Align woodies explode 2 feet off the deck when I went to idle up 2 and the heli came down hard. Nothing real bad, except the screw for the tail case bracket broke off... and I can't get it out. It looks like I need to buy a whole new tailcase instead of just the missing bracket. Damn. I just need to vent a little. I knew I shoulda put the carbon blades on today...

At least I am getting fast with flybar/feathering/mainshaft/main blade/tail shaft replacements (now that I know what to stock up on).

I'm not sure what screw you are talking about but here what I usally do when I have a screw break off like that:

Get a small drill bit, smallest you can get

Put it on a drill press and try to get it to "center punch" the bolt.

Now get a larger drill bit, still smaller than the bolt and set the drill press on slow,

Press down on it and if youre lucky , the drill bit will catch and help spin the bolt out of the other side.

Keep in mind that this would only work if there is a place for it to go

Also, it doesnt work every time but its worth a try

I had a screw on the tail case break and to my surprise all I had to do was thread a longer screw threw the hole. The longer screw pushed the broken piece out and I just replaced the srew with a new one.

My first screw for that bracket broke without even flying it, but I put it in too tight, second time I put it in a little looser and loctited it down, I do think those little black screws are too weak, the same ones hold the battery tray down, I broke 3 of those.... replaced them with different 2mm bolts....

But Honey, I can't live with just stock.....

Yep, those Align woodies are certainly a weak link on the Beam

I agree, the Align Wodies are the weak link.

They are tiny screws, you just need to snug them down. No Gorilla stuff

Yes, the align woodies were the cause of the crash, but I still think the design for the pitch lever bracket is not very good. Parts are on order, and it will be flying again soon.

With that screw you have stuck in the tail section I do the same thing CoasterFuelPhil does BUT if it is loctited in place make sure you heat it up to melt the loctite to allow it to come out.

Take offs are Optional, Landings are Mandatory

Do you think that the Align Pro Woodies are safe to the 2800rpms they are rated for? (according to the label on the pack)

lirob are you using a 13t pinion with the Scorpion-8? At 90% effiency you are spinning more than 3100revs

Live and learn - I will be sure to use composite main blades once I get the tail fixed.

Here is a picture of the screw/bracket/tail case. I still haven't had any luck removing the broken screw out of the case. I think I am going to have to drill out to 2.5mm and tap for a new larger diameter screw if I want to use the old tail case.

Yes, the align woodies were the cause of the crash, but I still think the design for the pitch lever bracket is not very good.

If the pitch lever mount screw gets loose or the lip on the case where it mounts gets slightly smoothed out after a crash, the lever mount can twist under high loads and cause a tail failure.. I would suggest that you put a dab of JB Weld between the little lever mount and case before placing the holding screw..

Experience talking here..

Lordsirob,

If you have an industrial supply house or a real good hardware store(I owned 1 for 17 years) get a 1 or 1.5mm reverse twist drill. These are commonly called left handed drills. Get a standard twist drill also.
Heat the part to loosen the blue loctite.
Get access to a small drill press and start a dimple in the bolt with the standard bit, then change to the reverse bit. Reverse the drill motor and ease it into the dimple. It will spin the screw out of the tail case in about 1 second.
