got the vertical fin finished and the tail cone for the tailboom under way. the vertical fin is constructed from paper thin birch wood with balsa in the middle, sorta like a balsa wood sandwich. this allows me to easily mount a tailskid in the lower fin and have it anchored in there so there is no coming out due to vibration or loosening glue over time. the birch sheeting is so smooth, it finishes nicely when sanded primed and painted. this is a regular practice on nearly all my scalers. the construction paper came in handy again for making the end tail cone. on the millitary versionof the jet ranger, (58's) the tail end here is different than the civilian version. the t/r gearbox is actually exposed and quite visible. it doesnt sit in a housing like the regular jet ranger does.

here is the balsa used for the center with the birch laminate for the outsides, that gets glued to the center

here you see the channels cut for the tailskid wire and the radio antenna on top of the fin. these are ca'd in and sandwiched between the birch sides.

the fin ready for paint

I like the way you mounted the skid, no way it will change position on you. What is th wire coming out the top of the fin?

surprisingly, though the wood pieces are as flexible as paper before putting it all together, when finished, the fin is not only light, but as rigid as the original fiberglass fin the fuse came with.
as for the wire deal atop the fin, i have no clue but i believe it is some sort of antenna. i will have to ask a kiowa IP or if someone here knows, maybe they'll chime in.

last sunday i took the machine out to continue some seting up and test flights. still have a few bugs to work out but it has been flying well. next series of test flights is to see how it runs when it is hotter than two hells out, and windy. i guartantee that at the nats, it will be hot and windy.
the rear doors will be on as well so this os engine willhave its work cut out for it.
anyway, if things continue along like they have, i will have it pretty much ready for the nats and ircha.
