Radio - JR & Spektrum DSM > 12x or x9303 debate

Well I am thinking about moving away from Futaba and jumping into the JR world. First I love JR's workmanship after I built their vibe .50 and I think I found my new company to deal with. Now the question is this, should I move to a 12x or the 9303.

I guess this will all have to do with bells and whistles or not, and I do have two options here. If I do the 12X then I would not be able to upgrade all of my recievers. My fleet consists of a Freya, vibe 50, 600n and a 450se. So this year if I get the 12x I can only upgrade one heli and have to use the other radio on the other helis. If I get the 9303 then I can probably upgrade all of my receivers and some of my servos. Big question is if the 12X is worth the money for a weekend flyer or not??? Thanks for all of your thoughts in advance.

Based on your scenario, get the 9303. The 12X won't make you a better flier.

If you've got extra money without other issues, then get the 12X.

I've had my 12X for three weeks and it's collecting dust. I'm not in a hurry to reprogram yet. But, I just had to have it just so that I could say I've got one . No big deal though.

I'm not looking for the radio to make me better, I just don't want to be at the point where I go, damn I wish I had the 12x instead of needing to upgrade later on. Does the 9303 have the 2048 resolution or is that only on the 12x?

Both radios are great. Given your situation the X9303 will free up cash to convert your whole fleet to DSM. Good choice!

Per Mr. Beard in another thread:

DX6i and DX7 are 1024 resolution.

AR6100, AR6200 and AR7000 are 1024 resolution.

12X and x9303 are 2048 resolution.

AR9000, AR7100R, AR7100, AR9100, AR9200, R921, R922, R1221 and R1222 are 2048 resolution.

Note: If you bind a 12X and x9303 to say an AR6100 receiver, the resolution is 1024. If you bind a DX7 to say an AR9000 receiver, the resolution is 1024.

Good luck!

the 9303 does have 2048 resolution. If I were to do it again I would buy another 9303 just in 2.4 cause I still fly 72mhz. When I bought mine the 2.4 wasn't out yet, it came 6 months later. I absolutly love the 9303 and see no reason for anything more especially for an additional 700.00. The ease of programming is light years ahead of any Futaba I have had experience with. There are only 2 things I wish were different.

1. I would like a backlight display for those low light level setups or changes.
2. A digital trottle trim to ease adjustment at idle on those hard starts. I just set up all my settings so that my trottle trim is always at center for easy reference.

Both are minor wishes.
Brian, I guarantee you wont be disapointed with a 9303.
I will be at the field this weekend if you want a tutorial of my 9303.
Here is the manual.

thanks Ron and Dave,

Dave I'll be on vacation this weekend till mid next week so hopefully I can get out to the field next weekend. I think I will go with the 9303 if I can get one more question answered. Will my gy-611, gv-1 and 9252's work with the JR receivers? particulary the R921?

I fly the same stuff but not 2.4 so I can't say for sure, but I really could not see why they wouldn't. Everything works flawlessly on 72mhz.

Don't forget to see what G-Force can do for you on that radio.

Yes, all your present equipment will plug and play fine with all DSM Spektrum or JR receivers.

I believe the free reciever promo has been extended for the 12X only, due to its late release date.

The one feature on the 12X that I use that the 9303 doesn't have is the virtual cyclic ring.

If the 12x can get you several free receivers (with purchase of other receivers) then the price difference may not be so bad.

Yes, that's a good point. And you do have until June 30th with a 12X purchase to take advantage of the giveaway.

Brian, you mentioned in your initial post that you were impressed with JR's workmanship. Both radios would be a fine choice for you, but the build quality of the 12X is stunning and nothing else matches it. You would love it.

yes I have heard that the feel of the radio is very nice, and the same goes for the x9303 as well. at retail prices it looks as if I could get a 12x for about 1350 at the LHS, and 2 rcvrs for another 400 + 2 free, so that would be about 1750 for the radio and 5 rcvrs, I have 4 helis.

If I do the 9303 they can get that for me for 550 and then I would need 3 more r912's at about 170 ea. I think the price difference is really going to win me over here. Now to see what I can sell my 9C super for with XPS module and receivers

Actually, you have until August 31, 2008 to purchase the receivers if you bought a 12X. Submission has to be postmarked by September 30, 2008.

I've been eyeing the x9303...I just wish I looked at it earlier with the rx deals.

I would sure buy one if the promo were to come again

I have the 9303 2.4 and have eyed the 12X since it was first talked about. I also went to the hobby show just to see it.

I just went and saw it again at the LHS and am considering getting it. I don't think most will use more what it does over the 9303 other than a very few specific things.

1)Backlite screen is simply awesome. We should force ALL radio manufactures to put in backlite screens. We have 2.4, servos that can put out 200 oz/in with hair pinpoint precision, batteries that can put out 250 amps, etc....but no backlite screen??? Huh??

2)It has servo slow on the heli side, no biggie unless you decide to do a bell 222 or such with retracts

3)Programmable timers built in.

Other stuff I have not really looked into to much. Virtual swash ring would be neat, trim offsets are different….for example if you subtrim the servo you can make it so the entire range is also shifted over (you don’t lose movement on one side vs other)....never noticed it myself for over 20 years but sounds "cool."

I think you said something in your statement that really hits home : you don’t want to be thinking, man I wish I had just bought the 12X. Also if you simply “want” one and can get it than do so.

I have learned from many years that I have bought the cheaper alternative just to spend more and get the one I wanted anyway. I think sometimes we feel more justified since we “did” try the cheaper alternative first.

Overall I don’t see 99% of people outgrowing the 9303.

HOWEVER, if you like the backlite screen, nicer beeps, better feel of the radio (and don’t get me wrong here, the 9303 feels great!), and the other things mentioned I say go for it.

Upgrade the rest of the fleet as time goes no. You could probably keep this radio easily for 10+ years.
