Century Hawk - Falcon - Raven - Predator > Raven Autorotation Pitch Range Question???

I read every where that for auto rotation you should have -5 degree pitch (bottom of stick) and the Hawk Pro instruction state this too.

In the Raven manual they state a -10 degree pitch for auto rotation.

My question is does the Raven need that -10 degree at the bottom of the stick or should I set it the same as my Hawk Pro at -5 degree and have both heli set the same?

And why should it be set different?

Thank you in advance.

Seems to me that when you're doing an auto, you're probably only at about -3 deg of pitch, so from there it just depends on where you like having the stick when you auto. -10 you'd be just below center, -5 you'd be a lot closer to the bottom.

Do you need -10 deg of pitch for an auto? No. Why the difference? My guess is two different people with two different methods writing the manuals?

By no means am I the authoritative resource on helis, but for what it's worth, I use the manuals as sort of a guideline, not written in stone. They never give you the perfect setup in the manual even for linkage lengths and stuff. Things always seem to need a bit of tweaking after.

Or maybe I just have a hard time following instructions...

3 to 5 deg of neg pitch is all you should need. Much more than that will slow your head speed down instead of allowing you to matain or speed it up.

Take offs are Optional, Landings are Mandatory

Sure I'm all for putting a face to the name. I fly at ORCC, and I wouldn't mind joining ORWF if one of you would kindly keel over and die so a spot opens up (I hear that's pretty much the only way in).

Anyway, same goes to you, as long as you have your MAAC, then I'm sure you're welcome to come fly at our field if you want to meet up. Then I can either shake your hand, or you can pop me one for all the solid advice I've doled out.

For a standard auto all that is needed is -3 or so.

As the Raven has a driven tail, one can also do aerobatic autos (e.g. backwards & inverted autos, with a flip or a roll to right side up before landing). In order to do these, one would need the same -10/0/+10 as used for 3D flight, and be proficient at 3D autos.

If you are just practicing upright autos, then a -3/-1.5/0/5/10 curve will do very well.

Thank you all for your answers.

And a special thank you to OLDFART (Phil). Your posts are always full of good information. Keep on the good work. And hope to see you at the 2008 Stetsons Heli Fun Fly.

Glad to help and to be appreciated.

So far I am planning to attend this year. Looking forward to seeing everyone again.

Looks to be a busy summer again...so far Saskatoon, Nanaimo and Edmonton have been fun. July will see Surrey, Washougal and Victoria...and August will be Kelowna, Ottawa, Victoria Airhow and Chilliwack.

I spent an interesting couple of weeks at the end of May, beginning of June, in Asia, attending the Aasian FAI/F3C championships & visiting the Tamiya, FunKey and Century factories before returning to Canada. All very interesting and worth while.
