I got a little too close to the curb when I brought my Aurora in for a landing. I thought I was going to buy a new set tail gears but none of the teeth broke off!

As long as they're properly meshed and not run dry it will take more than that to break them

Do the gears need to be lubed more than the first time?

I lube them each time I arrive at the field before the first flight.

Why is it that they need to be lubed...never really heard of this one before on other helis.

It's the nature of some plastics - reduces wear due to friction especially critical when the gears are new and just setting in.

It's not that uncommon...

- the 'single' main gear on a certain 90 class electric can be made to last a LONG time be keeping it lubed - if run dry it heats up due to friction with the steel pinion and soon fails

- Futura SE / Mille - it was possible to take out a new crown gear in minutes if run dry - one summer we went thru 13 of these back to back before learning this

My oldest set of tail gears are still going strong including 1 really bad crash - as of now they are 71 gallons old.

I actually let the oil from the smoke lube mine. I lubed mine when installed and then I just let the oil from the smoke lube them. Not to say that it's not a good idea to lube them but in case you wanted to know what happens if you don't the lube oil from the smoke seems to work perfectly fine.

Once in a while if I see them too dirty I spray them with fuel to clean them and let the oil from the evaporated fuel be the lube.

Augusto.

Im with Jason,
Mine get lubed once when I get to the field, and that does mine good for the rest of the day

What do you use for lube if not fuel?

Hey guys so you think is a good idea if I lube my tail gears on my MA stratus, Kuz I've never done it.

Life is too short,so I'm gonna fly as much as I can!!

OK, I'm getting mixed messages:

I've been told in the past to not lube the gears, as most lubricants collect dust - and the dust works as an abrasive compound to wear down the gears.

Still - I thought I'd ask, because I've seen arguments for and against lubing gears on a heli.

The fact that the oil from the smoke coats everything sounds like a pretty good refutation of the "don't lube the gears" argument; if only because it shows how if you fly nitro, you can't avoid lubing the gears.

I would lube the gears initially for the first flight, from then on its up to the pilot, but many of the team guys lube them and have had the tail gears last 10 gallons and still going strong.

I use fuel for the lube as recommended in the manual

I use fuel or sometimes a few drops of tri flow and have never had any issues with abnormal wear on the gears.

3d,

Saw this and just a reminder, to check your torque tube, the Aurora uses a low-fatigue softer alum-alloy tube, so it may have kinked after you touched the blades. I also just saw the new post from you, and thats what seems to have happened. Sorry I didnt catch ya sooner brother. I hope you get her up soon.
