Hi all
Does anyone know of any suppliers in the UK that can supply ceramic bearing sets, same size as in the OS 91SZ,
Thanks

Can't answer your question directly, but I can tell you that ceramic engine bearings provide ZERO increase in life. Neither does stainless steel.

My data is from putting over 2000 flights on OS50's, and trying all different types of bearings.

Stainless steel is softer , so may not stand up as well . How about trying a phenolic bearing ?

At the end of the day , it gets dark .

Wouldn't that depend on the application ?? I'm by far no expert on the subject but don't the r/c turbine engines use ceramics ??

If so, there has to be a reason for it I would think......

Edit: I see you're referring to the OS 50......

I wouldn't run them. I tried them a few years ago, and they chipped apart and destroyed the OS 70 that I was running them in. Not worth it.

I think that it depends on your rpm , at the rpm that turbines run , then ceramics are required .

I suggest you don't try those. I've had 2 sets of these fail and destroy 2 different engines, and OS won't warrant them because it isn't their bearing.

Also another guy I fly with has had the same happen with his ceramic.

We're currently testing a new bearing that may do the trick. We'll post here once we have enough flights on it to say if it is a better way to go.

Ceramin Bearing failures

PilotDaz

thanks for the feedback. any idea why they fail and what the differences are between these ceramics and the ones sold by Boca bearing?

Don't waste your money, they don't last any longer, the answer is there's probably no difference other than the price.

Ceramic bearing failures

so you recommend staying with Steel?

I've not had any failures with my RC- bearing ceramics, but notice that both ceramic and steel tend to rust very fast with the fuel I'm using. Won't name brand, but i susepct it has a higher than 30% nitro content, and if I'm not diligent about afterrun oil, my near the beach climate causes rust after a few mnths.

One reason ceramics might not hold up to piston engines is the vibration. Turbines run at high rpm but also very smooth. Or it might be like how regular steel can give a little while hardend steel just breaks. Not sure, just a quick thought.

if it is a set you need,

I do have a brand new set of ceramic ( rear and Front) they are for the OS 90.. i got them from Bocca as i could not locate a UK supplier, i tried SMB, plus a couple of other places.. in the end i had to go the US way.

if you are interested Dave let me know and i will post them out to you..
