Kyosho Caliber 30 & 60 - Concept - Nexus > How many Concept 60 clutches...?

Hi guys,

I have a question for the experts amongst you...! I recently got hold of a couple of genuine "new old stock" clutches for the Concept 60 out of an old hobby store. They are genuine Kyosho spare part number H6039A and marked as "Kyosho Concept 60 Clutch for OS Engine". I sold one to a chap in the US and after looking at it he's saying the clutch ID is possibly too small for the engine.

The guy I sold it to is a good guy and is no mug, so my query therefore is that I know there were a few different types of clutch for the Concept 60 to fit engines from different manufacturers (OS, Enya etc) but did OS produce 60 class helicopter engines with different crankshaft OD's...?

If the answer to the above is yes, then is there a second OS clutch type for the Concept 60...? If so, anyone know the part number...?

Cheers,

Rup

You can read and download the various Concept 60 manuals from this site:

http://www.rchelibase.com/concept/

The parts stuff in the back of the manuals would tell you, but a quick review shows a different set of clutch parts for OS, Enya, and YS, but not multiple part numbers for OS alone.

Remember that these parts were built for OS motors that were in production 15 years ago, not recent engines. I think the older OS motors had 1/4-28 threaded crankshafts. Perhaps the motor that the fellow is intending to use has a larger diameter crankshaft than those of yesteryear.

I think you're right. It must be a different OD crank on some OS motors (perhaps later ones got bigger). I did check the manuals but there was no reference to different OS clutches (most those manual on Helibase were scanned by me ). I'll try find out if it's a modern OS he's using.

Thanks for the help - always appreciated

If your buyer's expecting the older Concept clutches to fit his newer OS 61 -- I think he's in for a surprise.

The newer crop of OS 60s have 5/16-24 threaded crankshafts. If you look back far enough in the old OS manuals, you'll find that the OS 61 SFN-H (probably one of the motors that the clutches were destined for) had shafts that had 1/4-28 threads.

Starting with the OS 61 SX series and later, the threaded ends got bigger....

Looks like to use the new engine with the old clutch is going to require some machining or wishful thinking.

Aha...! That hits the nail on the head I think. I have also found other OS variant clutches for the Concept 60 so that led me down the route of different OD cranks on OS motors. Your investigation confirms this. Great sleuthing...! Thanks

When the Concept 60SR hit the market the OS 61SX was popular too. Then the choice of "clutches" (clutch shoes actually) went from 3 to 4. You originally had the 1/4-28 thread for the OS 61SF-H, OS 61SFN-H, then M7-1.0 thread for the Enya 60X (and variants), M8-1.0 for the YS (Yamada) 61 series and then the 5/16-24 for the OS 61SX-H.

Some of the earlier clutches had a single letter stamped on their face denoting the engine it would fit. I am positive the YS version had a "Y" marked on it and with such short threads existing in the hole, it had no problems installing on the OS 61SX 5/16-24 crank.

I have a machine shop and can make anything fit but that's not the case for the majority of modelers. I hope all works out OK.
