So what are you guys up to tonight? I'm working on my 100" sailplane in hopes to have it ready to cover this weekend to clear room on the workbench for the 78" sailplane kit that's on the way Summer is my heavy sailplane flying season (as you can tell)

Sittin here staring at the heli wishin I'd either order a main shaft, or go down to the LHS and get one. It's grounded until I do.

"Midnight Ryder" - nice.

All my batteries are charged and it's too dark to fly. I'll be here 'til the "Dawn Ryders" check in, then maybe get a pack or two in.

Anything y'all want me to tell the early birds?

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're NOT out to get you...

I hear it, going to the flying field around 6:30 to fly a few packs through 3 birds(2 planes, 1 heli)

I just finished a retune on the Mini and I thought I would check the board before I hit the sack. See I was lazy when I put on some new HD CNC parts and I never rechecked the pitch ranges. Turns out the new parts are slightly different and moved my -2,0,10 to something more like -4,-2, 8. Well that causes all kinds of fun stuff when you drop to half throttle and then try to save it. All better now though.

Well I am off to bed.

Just did some midnight flying by the streetlight. Nothing too crazy, kinda hard to see.

I spent about 2 hours rebuilding my bling king from the ground up. I have a new HDX3800 motor, 10T, new bearings in all the high speed places, new frame, new servos and so on. I have been slowly buying the stuff to build a second king and it was time to put all the good stuff in my blinged out heli. The other will be mostly stock. Well the build went pretty well and except for a twitchy servo, it was running ok. The front servo went nuts when I powered it the first time. It hunted all over and finally centered. When I repowered it, it did the same thing. Lets just say it was not instilling confidence. So I swapped the plug with a another cyclic and everything was fine. So I put it back and it seems fine now. Maybe it was just a bad connection ... time will tell. So I spun it up and it is TOO quiet. Something has got to be wrong somewhere. I just don't feel the high head speed of the 10T and it is whisper quiet. I will try to fly it tomorrow if there is no wind but right now it worries me that something is wrong.

Let me just say that right now all I want to do is put the King on the shelf and go fly the Mini. I hate thinking like that but I may be ready to move on. I have a lot of parts for the King and it is fun to fly but compared to the Mini it is just not in the same league ... I am not sure what I want to do.

I was going to be working on my helis tonight, but got called out on an emergency job. SOOOOO, back up in Detroit I am again.

But, when I get back, I have a couple of packages waiting for me. I will now have one king with the logitech 2100 and one will get the futaba 401.

Well, at least this is a quick job. Start tomorow night at 6pm, work until 6amm, get a few hours sleep, and then head back home.

Hey JW, do you guys have these short little emergency call outs too, or is yours all scheduled?

More often than I like I'd say it's a 50/50 for me. Although some of those "short" jobs can turn into quite a while. You know how it is.

Chris,

I'm not sure I really want an answer, but I have to ask. What flight characteristic of the Mini are so much better than the HBK2? I've never flown a 450 and so I'm wondering what all the fuss is about. If you can, put some words to the differences.

Thanks!

Greg

There are two things. One is the machine itself. The King always feels sorta cobbled together, things work ok but it doesn't instill a huge amount of confidence. When I work on the Mini and then go back to the King, the King feels like a toy that is barely held together. I know that is flies ok because I have over 200 packs in the little guy but now having put 50 packs through the Mini, the King feels kinda lame build wise. Then there is the flight quality. I can't really put it in words but I have finally gotten comfortable with the Mini and now I really like it. It is so smooth and sure of itself. It is never twitchy and follows commands with high precision. I really need to put a few packs through the King again to really get the full experience of going from the Mini to the King but I expect to yearn for the Mini.

Part of my thoughts last night were based on the difficult time I had building it. It wasn't too hard but there was a lot of fighting it. Like the belt tension and direction. That is a pain. The Mini is trivial. Then there is the servo mounting. Most of that is my fault for using the s3114 servos but that is a pain. I almost wish for some HS65s or something that would just simply fit but I am cheap. Anyhow don't let my negativity towards the little guy sway anybody. If you would have asked me what I thought 3 weeks ago, I would say spend you money on a King and never look back. I had no reservations. But then the Mini got some real use and I have seen the difference and am having a hard time going back. It is like driving a Ford Focus for 4 months and then jumping in a Lexus GS for a few weeks. It is really hard to go back

Thanks Chris. I understand the build comments. Even though my HBK2 is running great now, I went through some pain to get it there. About the flight quality, never twitchy and follows commands with high precision that is kind of what I expected.

On my HBK2, I've gone back and forth between the stock blades and the cut down Align blades. The flight characteristics differences between the blades are just as you described. I like the Align blades alot. I imagine the Mini is all that and more.

Did some maintenance last night.
The belt felt loose, so I tightened that, not thinking that it would throw the tail rotor out of whack until after I did it.

But, that opened an opportunity to re-visit that set-up, and get a better look at it. I never was to happy with it.

So I reset the tail servo to 90*, and adjusted the linkage so that the tail rotor is at center. We'll see how that goes if I get time to fly later (working today - Saturday - Slave driver boss!).

Then I just went through the head & body looking for loose screws, etc.
All looks good.
As I accumulate flight time on this heli, and I'm getting used to it, and used to flying a single rotor heli, the more I like it. Good stability, good honesty. All around, a nice heli.

In a way, I'd like to get it on more experienced hands to see what they say, and offer up any tweaks, or adjustments that I should make that would make it fly better. But it will hover hands off now (for a very short time! It DOES have a case of the wanders... especially now with the increased head speed!). And it seems a nice flier.

I look forward to actually being able to get out and do some FF, and fly around instead of just hovering.
I'll get there...

How far are you from Greg? He would be a great help in getting it setup perfectly. Plus if he got to fly it, he would finally get to experiance a 450

Greg is actually pretty close to me. A matter of 3 or 4 miles.
We're talking about getting together to do some flying if we can both tear ourselves away from work/family long enough to actually leave the house.

When we do, I can assure you I'll put the TX for the 450 in his hands, and he can see what the noise is all about.

tonight lets see mailing off my Electricub and just quit tweaking the REX stripped out a couple frame screws holding the tailboom got them out and replaced seeing the new King fiber frame is a good idea but it looks like it wasnt made only for the king therefore somethings fit better and some worse I love the frame but the little differences annoy me. It will be sweet though when its all finished. Oh and trying to find a good piece of landing gear wire for my slow stick A.K.A. twiggy. And cutting tree limbs with a 10ft long hand saw preparing for a motorcycle ride tomorrow and BS'ing on RR.

Man Im getting tired let shizack rule the night.
