Kyosho Caliber 30 & 60 - Concept - Nexus > Caliber 700

I have posted a few pics of the new Caliber 700 on my gallery. The machine was built over the weekend and it has been tested with 2100mah 30C Orion batteries. They are all I have until tomorrow. Surprisingly the machine is flying for upwards of 4 minutes with these packs (requires 2 in series). If a few days I will have some 4800mah batteries to fly so I will give some more info. The power plant is a Hacker A40-8L 8-Pole using a Hacker X-70 Pro 3D controller. After 5 4 minute flights doing setup I decided to do a few flips and stationary rolls. The machine flys very well. I am using 550mm Rotortech blades but the manual shows that up to 570mm can be used. Right now it is a Caliber 30/4 size and it flys with significantly more aggressive power than the glow version. Once I get the bigger batteries installed it may change the performance some due to the heavier weight. If you think the standard glow version Caliber is smooth you should fly one of these. It is wisper quiet and smoooooooooth!
Head speed is somewhere between 1950 to 2100 with the stock gearing although changing the pinion gear will allow up to 2250 (unloaded). The stock pinion is from the Caliber 5 and the optional pinion is from the Caliber 4.

Dwight,
Whats the total flying weight with the 2100 packs?

Mike

Edit: Are parts available in the states for this thing yet?

The Push/Pull Tail looks interesting. Looks like a fine bird. Can't wait to hear how it does with some bigger batteries. Thanks Dwight.

I do not have a scale that is accurate to weigh the heli itself but when I hold it and weigh myself it appears to be around 7 lbs with 2100 batteries. If I can get an accurate weight I will let you know.

Parts will be in stock in couple weeks.

Why the 700 title if its a 30 sized heli?

700 is a reference to the can size of the motor. Kyosho decided to use the can size versus the blade size like other manufacturers.

Caliber 700 battery

Hi great to see others buying and flying Kyosho Heli's, hi there too you all, i am going to get one of these 700's when they hit the UK, i was thinking of buying the heli and seeing if the the battery's off of a Trex 500 would fit, they are small (Size wise) lipo's than those on the trex 600, but are 22.2 V and come in sizes as big as as 4500mAh and above, i was thinking in removing the saddle packs and place the trex cells in the chassis behind the motor, though this does depend on the available space. Any comments (nice one's please)
And again great to see Kyosho flyers etc, very few here - shame.

Kev,

The problem with doing a single pack in the center of the frames is cg. The battery would be too far behind the main shaft due to the position of the motor. I already looked at this option. It could be done if you modify the frames by cutting away some of the gussets that give strength to the lower frame assembly. As it is now I have the batteries about 60 to 65 percent ahead of the main shaft for good level balance.

I went to a fun fly this weekend in St. Charles, IL and saw a 700 up close and in person. It looks just like the new Caliber 6 with an electric motor. There were 2 of them there and they both flew very smooth. One guy was doing just hovering with his but Dwight was doing 3D. I have to say I really was impressed with the performance and how smooth the machine flew. I think the electric machine is going to be popular, expecially with $40 a gallon fuel prices.

Dwight,

On our Caliber 4/5/6 conversions we use a single 6 cell battery mounted where the fuel tank used to be....right where the c of g should be.

From my initial look at the 700 something similar should be possible.

Saves all that mucking around with Y cables and also means that charging/balancing the pack is easier.

We are still getting 10 mins plus and plenty of head speed now that we have put the Cal 4 pinion on the Cal 6 or 5.

Cheers

Michael

A person could do exactly what you are doing with the new 700. I think the batteries sticking out the sides does not look as clean but I am sure it works as well.
I personally prefer to use the y connector with the 3 cells because as we all know batteries can develop a weak cell. If this happens with a 6S pack it costs much more to replace than one 3 cell. I have actually hovered many flights now with my 3S 2100 packs for testing since I have so many of them. I can get almost 5 minutes with them.
Over the weekend I found out that at full throttle the head speed will run 2300 with my Hacker A40-8l 8 pole motor and the stock gear ratio (12.5 to 1). The motor is a 1300kv and 1100 watts. The best speed seems to be about 2100. What motor and head speeds do you use.

Cal 6 Electric

Gidday Dwight,

We use Hyperion 4020 -10 motors or -8 if you want even more head speed.

My Cal 6 is a -10 and we are getting around 1830 rpm on idle up 2 which for me is plenty as I am non 3D at this stage.

If I was to put the -8 in we would get about 2200.

So the -10 is not a bad balance as we can run right down to 1450 if we want a "scale" look.

Cheers

Kev again

Hi guys thanks for the info on the battery sorry its been a while, i have just bought a Caliber 700 today, i got my kit with the Kyosho supplied motor and built in speed controller, the motor is incased in a large metal heatsink, the back has a slot in it and the PCB etc is inside the metal heatsink. The kyosho part number is 70271 AF700BLS H/30/12 Motor, has anyone seen any instructions for the motor or the speed controller, the PCB of the speedo has a jumper on the bottom but i dont know what it does? the other weird thing thing is that the power leads for the battery (main) were they enter the housing on the base, there is a plug for a very small fan unit (supplied) that is about 1" accross and is to be attached somewhere to feed cold / cooler air, but again no instructions etc, once i start building the chassis i hope to suss out where it goes, any thoughts or suggestions, many thanks. Kev.

My 700 is on the way!!

Spoke to my supplier in Auckland, and Grant is sending me a 700 overnight! I'm gonna do my darndest to have it at the Funfly in 9 days.

This will be keeping my 2 other Cal's company- the 30 is inside my trusty silver Twinstar, and the 5 is inside the sweet new Breitling. And both of these helis have been converted to electric, by the folks in Auckland- just like calibermichael

And a note for Dwight- seems we have friends in common! A couple months ago, you were in South Florida, and had dinner with a good heli mate of mine- Tony I, and also Paul T. Tony reported after the dinner that you had discussed the 700- and small world- I'm getting one!! Wacky, eh??

Tony and I go way back, and while I have yet to meet Paul, I've known about him from when I was first getting into helis in the mid-80's. It sounds like they are both good friends and also very skilled flyers.

Maybe our paths will cross one day-

We had some fun flying together for the day. At that time I did not have the 700 yet. You should have no trouble getting it together in a short time. They build very easy.

Thanks Dwight- I've got my work table cleared, and ready for building.

And every time I hear a vehicle go by- I leap up to see if it's the courier guy with the heli!

This will make it #8 for the fleet, and the 4th Kyosho. And just showing my age- all but one of the rest are TSK's- and flying, too!

Later- g2
