e-BEAM Beam E4 > Scorpion Motor/ESC Question

Is it necessary to grind a flat spot on the shaft of the motor for the set screw to get a good bite?

Looking at this thread, it looks like most of you are using the BEC in the ESC. I have the huge Scprpion 55 ESC. Is it a good idea to use the built in BEC or should I do something differently?

Do a couple of pinions come with kits? There are a pair in mine, I think a 13t and a 15t. I also have 14t and 15t Hard One pinions. If I want to use 13t, are the pinions that come in the kit good quality.

EDIT:
One more Question...Im trying to use a Futaba 9257 servo on the tail. If I make the included boom mount pieces work, the servo looks like it is going to be against the boom. I probably shouldnt do that , right? Should I upgrade the mount or will it work as is?

Sorry for all of the questions. I appreciate the help.

Thanks,
Jimmy

You can use permanent CA to also set the pinion. I never had any problems with mine coming loose. Don't know what pinion u need. If its the 8 motor, I think people are using the 13t.

People use a BEC usually when their ESC is overheating and causing shutdown. Its just safer to use BEC IMO.

on 450 sized no need to grind aflat really, i do it anyway, then its easier to remove pinion later.

Regards to bec, i have never understand the need for them on such small helis, unless you have a really crappy esc.
Scorpion esc's bec is overdimensioned,so no issue and I run metalgeared digital servos...

(Just as comparison, I run a 3.5amp bec on my 11lb .90 sized electric with 8717 servos and 710 blades...)
Some insist on 3.5amp bec on a 450...

I've needed to use a BEC many times on a 450.

I've had to use them with CC35 ESC's, Hacker 30 Pro ESC's, and now my Align 35 ESC that got too hot using EVO25's.

Aha, but not because the bec is too weak, only to keep the temp of the esc down, that makes sense when using a underdimension esc, add a external heatsink would work too though.

If I add a 10amp(peak so probably 3A cont) castle sitching Regulator BEC to myScorpion ESC, dont I have to disconnect the red wire from the ESC connection.

It looks like Im going to order a MicroHeli tail servo mount since the S9257 servo will either mount in only one hole on each side of the mounting rings or the case is in a bind against the boom. I might as well order this inexpensive BEC while Im at it.

Does this BEC look to be sufficient?

Thanks for the help.

That is what we use to power the receiver and digital servos on our Trex600 electric with Align 75amp ESC.

This is the bec that I use on all my helis. great bec and cheap. And you dont have to cut any wires when using this bec.

The one I ordered came in today. I think that Im also going ahead and ordering a Castle 35a ESC instead of using this giant Scorpion 55.

This is the BEC I now have

I went ahead and ordered a Castle 35A ESC today. The Scorpion 55 is soo big it covers up the whole side of the heli and looks like it will blocks air flow to the motor.

Just in case, I will also use the little CC switching BEC too.

I may go ahead and install the Scorpion 55 so I can attempt to fly this thing this weekend.

It looks like with an 11t pinion and the 2221-8 motor the head speed will be over 2600 if the motor effiency is 90%. I would really like to start out at 2500 or less. Should I just dial in the throttle curves at 90% up top or what?

I will have the full weights in the Gorilla paddles to hopefully smooth it out and calm it down a little for my old fart reflexes. What else will help?? About -30 expo? Any advice?

Thanks,
JImmy

I ground a flat into my -8 after I crashed from the pinion coming loose in a backwards hurricane.
No more problem now

If you bling it, they will come :D
