I just purchased a new video cam for recording flight... and my kids. It is a Sony SR11 hidef hard drive recorder.

Should I use a telephoto lens to capture 3d video's or just the camera and its zoom.

Thanks

I have the same camera. If you are hand holding the camera while filming your best off using the camera's zoom as little as possible. While the image stabilization is okay, the image quality will degrade significantly when you zoom in. In that regard, if you need to get tighter shots of the heli your best bet would be to use a telephoto lens. If you use a tripod then the camera's zoom works great and the image quality is very good.

Thanks, I ordered the tripod. I guess i will have to get the lens as well and see if it makes a difference.

hello

good point to remember is that you can zoom in and keep the quality if you only use the optical zoom, dont use the digital zoom this just blows up the pixels and quality is dreadfull, some cameras have 700x digital zoom and are useless....no substtute for glass, your cam may allow you to put a converter on the front, this will keep the pic quality but it will require you to film in really good light as it effectively stops down the aperture

I kinew I shouldnt have touched that switch

My advice FWIW, is to get a decent wide angle lens. This lens is better for heli shooting IMHO. I've asked several pro photographers and I've heard a recurring theme and that's it.

Don't forget a good UV lens too.
