I been flying helicopter long time and saw many crash in my time but nothing like what happen to one of RJX field rep. last Saturday I went to the club and Mike Calendar was flying his Xtreme 50 he was doing some 3d he came to hover when he pump the heli to outside flight again the head came apart. The head block broke in halve the blades with the rest of the head went one way and the fuse went to another, and I now this heli never been crash before for something like this happen to the head block . After this I just discard the Xtreme 50 as my next heli in my fleet

If you start discarding any heli from you list that has crashed or had mechanical failure, your list would be pretty small if non-existent.

I don't think a head exploding has been a common problem with the X50.

It could also be a build issue. I personally saw 3 X50's go in HARD before I bought mine, and that still didn't make me shy away, why?, because I knew it's a good heli.

I've seen similar things happen to lots of helicopters. Sh$t happens. Even the best of the best will have problems from time to time. I saw Curtis' Vibe 50 split in half down the middle of the frame a couple of weeks ago. Doesn't mean I think any less of JR quality.

I don't think vquick1 would delibrately jump into this section and made the post if he had decided to pass on the X-50.

At this point, i think it's a one off incident with the rotor hub. I have had mine for longer than i can remember and several crashes later, it's still intact. However, that doesn't mean it hasn't been damaged or fractured in previous crashes. It's a good thing you pointed it out, i'll go thru every one of my helis more carefully on post crash inspections.

On the other hand, you can reconsider the X-50 and should you want additional insurance, i'm sure your local dealer can make you a satisfactory deal together with the upgrade head as an add-on purchase.

I have all the optional parts in my box now, but i can't convince myself to change them when the stock items are all working perfectly for me. but i guess someday the devil in me will get better of me

Hey you all,
I am the field rep that had the mishap. I would like to set the record straight and help stop all the assumptions. Here is what happened play by play. I was flying my heli doing average hard 3d. as I came in next to me to do a foward flip about 3 feet of the ground there was like a small explosion and the head went up and the fuse went down. I just threw throttle hold and flew the biggest part.(that is a joke, Lighten up) Uppon inspection we saw where the head block sheared right at the section that makes the four points for the flybar carrier. Before you ask my head speed is at 2200.
That is it. Oh, so you want to know the dammage! I got lucky. I had installed nylon bolts on the landing gears like G-Force does, and so gears broke away. I believe that save the frames and all I need to replace is the complete tail assy. I have a extra tail assy. fore and aft blades, and everything from the swash up except grips. Now all that being said, I have been around helis since the first gyros had ballbearings in them. That ought to raise some eyebrows with you young ones. I have seen a lot and this is not the end of the world. I will continue to fly my RJX X-50 not because I have to, but because I want to!! Hell can't wait till the day I can own a X-90. One other thing, if you sit there and talk about my build, then since you don't know me I am assuming that your talking smack!

No smack talk, I don't know you, but that does not change the fact that mistakes happen and no-one can build it perfect every time without fail. I'm not saying this is the case here, but was a suggestion perhaps without knowing any other details. The only reason I even mention build issue is because it's not unheard of, rep or not.

Just thought I'd point that out.........

Well after this I will discard this one cause all the problems I read in this tread. I been flying helis from 1982 when even gyros exist flew many brands and never saw a head block broke like that in a new heli. This is the second Xtreme 50 he got the first one was crash by pilot error and also I saw that one and also that part broke so this is bad head design for me

I see that you fly raptors, I've seen and had that happen to me when I flew them.does this mean your going to sell them now? Personally I think your mind was made up before this happened, that is your choice. It's too bad because your missing out on a great heli.

I saw the head come off a 600N at my field weekend before last when the Jesus bolt sheared in half. You better shelf that 600N now...

Jesus bolts shear on any heli, especially if they are not replaced occasionally, used after a crash, overtightened, or if a fully threaded bolt is used.... head blocks shearing in half are not common.......

No, I get your point that anything can happen (though you used an orange to compare to an apple, hehe) - but the OP has a valid concern as to why a head block sheared in flight and people are downplaying it to "just part of the hobby". I have never seen a metal head shear in flight, its not common and I think its a valid concern, though it may be a one-off and never happen again.

I agree - I guess my point is that I would not take a helicopter off my "list" because of just one incident. If a pattern developed, sure, but like you said, with just one incident it could be a one-off.
