What do you guys think of this? It's a little over a gallon of 87 pump gas with 4oz of Lawnboy ashless. Engine is now running between 1600-1750 (10K-11K rpm engine speed). I'm pretty sure I'm rich on the H needle as it slows down on climbout, but not like a heat sag and it got worse when I opened the H needle a bit. Not sure about the L needle. I am definitely running lean.
My plug looks way lighter than that.
I should have checked my plugs earlier.

Please tell me what you think.

Temps seem to be hittimg max of 240-250 F pointing in the shroud and around the exhaust port. I reset the low end needle today, I think I may have been a touch lean there. I put it just below 1 1/2 and now it's hard to start, had to turn up the idle quite a bit. Still think I'm rich on the top end as I don't have full throttle power the way I think it should.

EDIT: of course I didn't have the temp gun - dummy me forgot it.

I'll give you temp readings next time i go out.

L needle 1 1/2
H needle 1 3/8

I may need to adjust for Jamaica's Warm Temps

jschenck,, Check you temp on the carb side,, Third fin from the base,, the temp will always be hotter on the exhaust side,,, After you went rich on the L needle, how does it idle, and transition to throttle?? is it ok?? or does it supdder?? If you were lean on the L needle then richen it up,, you will need to bring your throttle trim up some to keep it running,,

turbogti,, What oil are you useing??? It does look lean to me, what are your temp???

Also,, when your hovering where is you carb arm at,, below half, or past half way open,, this will determin which needle needs to be adjusted,,,for flying,,,, Always set the L needle for smooth idle, and smooth transition,, Hope this helps.. XGM/VGM

Yikes! This goes against everything I've been taught about tuning a Zenoah helicopter engine. John, are you sure about this? The more common thought is to tune the LO needle for proper mix at hover, then set the idle wherever it needs to be, regardless of what it sounds like.

Please clarify - thanks.

After I reset the L the idle is rougher and requires quite a bit more throttle to start and keep running. Probably will move it in one screwdriver blade and see how that goes.

I'm using 4oz of Castrol TTS synthetic and 87 Octane

I haven't checked my temps i'll do that next time up.

That is why I asked where the carb arm was at during hover,, Some helis, hover on the H needle, like the Spectra G, That is why I said to set the L needle to smooth idle and smooth transition.. Yes you will have to adjust the throttle trim for idle.. if you do it this way, and still hovering on the L needle, you will still be close ( in the ballpark), If you set your needle to smooth idle, and then give it some throttle and it hesitates, then your lean on the L needle, if it stumbles or burbles then your rich, Always has been, and alway will be.. I hope this clears up what I was trying to say,, XGM/VGM

jschenck, sounds like your rich now on the L needle,, go in small amounts untill it ildes smooth, and transtitions smooth

turbogti, then yes,, I would say that your lean, by looking at your plug,, Check you temp on the carb side, third fin from the base,, XGM/VGM

No doubt! That's a 601/9251. I can't beleive how solid the tail is. I need to get some sim time for more tail first flight, still makes me queasy but this gyro will make it easier.

jschenck, Nice flying,,, I though I could hear it 4 stroking a couple of times, so you might be a smigget rich, but other than that,, It sounded great,, XGM/VGM

I did watch your video

Pretty good flying! The only thing I would advise is don't slap the rudder stick and release it and that is alot of torture on your gears and you may very well strip the gears in flight doing so. You can pirouette as slow or fast as you want, just don't suddenly release it of whack it quickly back and forth as I saw in the video unless you're prepared to change gears every so often and are good in autos if necessary!

I was kind of showing what the 601 can do there but you are right I do think about breaking the teeth on the crown gear. I did set the 601 up in F3C mode and am running 37% gain (as displayed on the amp) so I hope it's not too hard of a stop. I'll have to post a few seconds of my Raptor piro, talk about abuse.

I think I may try leaning the H needle a tad and see if that helps the top end. I did stuff some foam into the shroud so should be some effective baffling for better cooling.

jschenck,, if you do lean the H needle,, be sure to check your TEMP, and plug, I don't want you to hurt your engine, But it sounds like you know what your doing, and can tell the differance, just don't run it to long before checking your temp,, You might check it like you are, after flying some, the Lean it just a smig, then fly again for a minute or so, then check it again,, to see if there is any differant in temps..... Hope this helps.. XGM/VGM
