hi all,
this is a project i have been working on for a while. havent had much time to do much but here are a few pics of recent progress, enjoy.

this is the mount for the disco ball made from simple carboard material like that used for cereal boxes etc. easy to cut, glue and paint

this is the shock absorbing platform that the disco ball actually sits on. that cardboard is usefull stuff

the instrument panel again is cut from a combo of balsawood for backing and construction paper all glued together with ca and painted flat black.

how nice to be watching a helicopter program on tv while building your heli in the workshop. thank you discovery channel

the instruments are now added. my subscriptions to many aviation magazines proved worth while after all. they are where all my instruments come from

the belt drive tailrotor system on the thunder tiger raptor makes fliping the tail to the same side as the fullsize kiowa an easy task. remember, you only flip the case, not the belt so dissasembly is necessary. the stop molded into the inside of the case has to be removed or another slot must be carefully cut into the end of the boom to accomodate.

the MMS (mast mounted sight) is what for me makes the kiowa. this one will pan left and right while in flight. na simple on off swith operated manually will set it in motion. i will be too busy flying to worry about operating it by rc. an actual camera on board woulf raise the cool points but for a 50 size machine, it would also raise the weight unecessarily and complicate the machine.

Ok, I'll bite. How did you get the ball to work mounted on the shaft like that?

Man, I miss the eighties.

Looks very good....just wondering if you are going to cover the passenger windows or leave them open for cooling....and the one question is how do you get the MMS to work on top of the rotor system...

the rear windows will be covered( they have to be as they are on the full size) but i have taken some measures to ensure adequate cooling. as for the mms on top, that is going to have to be another post explaining (have done so in the past) but i wil try to document it with pics and video this time as they will help explain things easier than the text by itself. it isnt as difficult as one may think. what was important in making it possible was choosing the 50 size mechs that mkes it the easiest to do and the raptor won. it was done also with a hawk pro/sport and sceadu but the the rappy fit my needs for this particular project best. my lonbow with the fcr on top was done with xcell 60 mechs, also easy to do.

I'm guessing it has something to do with using hollow main shafts in the Raptor.

Some sort of tube that doesn't spin or a carbon rod or something running up the inside of the main shaft, controlled from a steering arm on the bottom?

Only thing I don't get is how you get around the spindle which goes through the middle of the head.

cuda, you are correct! but as i am not using the flybarred head, the spindle isnt an issue.

So, do you drill/tap into the hollow mainshaft for the headbolt, so it doesn't go all the way through?

actually the mast isnt modified at all. the center hub is drilled and tapped for 4mm bolts. i use two, one screws in from opposite sides into the main mast. the bolt's tip is tapered so it seats in the dimple/hole on the main mast where the 3mm bolt would normally pass thru. the same is done for the main gear below. i machine the parts necessary to make it all happen.

Here are some pictures of my Kiowa , I converted it from Century 50 Jet Ranger, all made by fiber glass included the interior and pilot , I used 50 Electric Trex 600 and Raptor metal head, the battery will be mount both inside of the heli. The radar on the top of the head will be add on later.

more work coming along.
like Don Henley says, i've trying to get down to the heart of the matter. well i finally got somepics of the heart of this 58D. here are some of the things i did to this poor raptor to get things to work.
the throttle servo was relocated aft of the frames. the tailrotor servo is just behind it mounted to the boom

the reciever has a new spot as well. a threaded aluminum spacer mounted to the sideframes has a bit of lite ply on the other end which allows it to be mounted with rubber bands. convenient and easy to get to

on this side, (right rear) of the frames, the servo for fore/aft enjoys its new home. right underneath it, is the servo that moves the ball left and right. this servo was retired from flight controls and had all the electronics removed. the motor and geartrain is allthat remains and all it does is turn. the removed detent alows it tocontinually turn with an arm that goes to the ball control lever.

this shot shows the gearing and the bal control lever. since the servos travel only give me so much throw, i forund it necesary to create a geared device which increases the ratio togive me a full 180 degrees of travel. plenty to be noticable

this little deal is still experimental but a way to help quiet things as well as divert the exhaust where i want it to exit the fuse. it is all contructed from construction paper laminated with thin ca several thicknesses and then fuelproofed with finishing resin. so far, it has held up to four tankfulls. hey, you gotta experiment with things

im very impressed with the way youve managed to get that extra space in the cockpit. ive been making a eceruil and have had to put the cockpit around the servos, i have cut the battery tray off but thats it. some great ideas there.
