Apparently , tube must be exactly correct length to work properly,,,I did not build the bird I am flying ...Apparently one of the blue croses let go and the tube starts beating everything silly
,,,Looks like the belt would be an easier set up...All my nitro are belt..

That's cool, everybody likes different things. I was just curious.

Keep in mind though that the torque tube has less play and slop in the system as compaired to a belt drive.

To get the torque tube built right try this: Get a new tube and remove the little inserts in the old one that are at the ends so you can use them on your new one. On one end go ahead and assemble the claw end and slide the tube in the boom and re-insert the boom in the tail boom bracket and get everything all tightened up. On the tail side do a "dry fit" set up. Dont pt the small insert into the tube on this end yet. First put your coupler on and and very lightly set the grub screws that secure it. Next attach the couplers on the gearbox and end of the but together. Measure the distance between the gearbox and the end of the bracket that the gearbox attaches to in millimeters. Remove the gear box and the coupler that you attached to the end of the torque tube and slide the torque tube out of the boom a bit. (the blue hex will stay in one of the couplers when you do this) Now take that same measurement, add one millimeter to it and mark that distance on your torque tube and cut it. Permanantly build the other end of the tube, slide it back in the boom and re-seat the coupler. Lastly attach your gear box and you're all set. Now your torque tube will have 1mm of end float. This keeps it from binding and building up friction and heat that can destroy the endes.

Some years back I melted a universal coupler because I had a bit of a bind on the tube, talk about a mess.

Hope the above info helps.

Please keep in mind that "play and slop" is totally meaningless. Once those tail blade start moving, the entire drive train is under load and will stay that way throughout the flight. FYI, gears, by their very nature of requiring tooth-to-tooth clearance, have play and slop that simply cannot be tuned out and the more stages of gears present, the more additive "play and slop" you'll get. But again, it's under load and play-free so rethink what you posted.

The constant battle, "Which is better, gears or belt?", will never be settled. Both have their advantages. Efficiency is better for gears, low cost and survivability for the belts. Take your pick...

I hear that belts spark out in the longer spans (rfi issues). I also would take into consideration the engineering record, experience, of the entity providing the parts. Vario is fine with me generally, aftermarket sources obviously can be better-same-worse as far as quality, engineering sense, etc.

I have run the TT drive on the Vario for a while and have not had surpises from this machine, but have had TT drives fail on other (non-vario) machines. Keep an eye on built length, and I use red loctite, not blue on Taildrive parts.

I'd be happy to rethink what I posted but when shimmed and set with tight, but not binding tolerances theres little free play in the system as compaired with the belt. Over time with wear on the gears slop or free play in the gears will be present. True though, that when spooled up and under a load that play is not there.

Personally I could care less for the belt vs. tube battle, that's not what I was trying to bring into the fore, just simply stating the advantage of the torque tube from my view or opinion (not that I'm an authority)

In many ways a belt is so much more forgiving. Torque tubes can be troublesome and expensive. Don't forget, you have gears in the tailbox and gears at the jackshaft with the Vario. I personally don't like the Vario TT. It's one of those designs that if everything is just right you are good. But if something isn't right, failure is right around the corner. Been there more than once. I have a belt drive conversion for my Acrobatic. I haven't had much free time for helis this spring but maybe in a month or two I'll get it together after the last tail assy caused crash.
