e-BEAM Beam E4 > Tail slider bearings..

Has anyone ever had these come loose? I was doing some flips, rolls, beginning inverted, and luckily, they let loose while I was only about a foot from the ground. Both bearings popped out. I have them curing now with green loctite. Is the adhesive the only thing that is supposed to retain these?

the slider is threaded so you can adjust the bearing preload...
the slider may have unscrewed or cracked off at the area the threads start..

Actually the bearings came loose at the OD from the part with the ball on the one end.

Looks like you have the same problem
I just received the Beam E4 from advantagehobby a few days ago and started to assemble it... I came to a quick stop at the tail assembly when the tail pitch slider (ball) slid right off the bearings. It’s not even snug, it slides right off. This has to be a manufacturing defect… I can’t believe the design calls for this part to be “glued” to the bearings with locktite. From the picture in the manual it looks like the part has a small rim in the center that the bearings lock on to. I’m calling Advantagehobby tomorrow to get it replaced.

I'm at work and don't have access to my Beam. Could you post a pic of what you're talking about?
Thanks,

Mine doesn't have a rim in the center either. I wasn't sure I was seeing the picture on the plan correctly, but it made sense to have a central lip. I'm going to give Beam a call too. I got real luck that it happened only a foot off the ground over grass. A few seconds before that, I was flying around 70 feet up over asphalt.

Ohhh... that is a funky set up. I haven't inspected mine yet b/c it's been cursed w/ other bad Karma, but it looks like the "slide sleeve" once red loc-tited and screwed in is what holds it all together eh. Has anyone heard from Beam on this for a definitive answer?

any update with this problem? The same thing happened to me today. Do I clean and re-loctite with red or replace it completely?

Green is a sleeve retainer which would be best for that application.

So can Beam or someone confirm on how this part is designed internally?
Is is supposed to have that small lip in the center or is it just glue that is meant to hold it?

I have ordered a second one just to be safe and see if it has the small lip in the inner, but have green loctite on my current one and it is holding in place, so far.........

new problem with tail design

I received a new tail slider with bearings from Advantage Hobby. The new one seems to be tight but I don’t see how this design can be reliable after being subjected to vibration and oil over time. Well… I guess I don’t have any choice until either I or Beam comes up with a solutions or better design (then too it may never come lose again). If the tail slider had a rim in the center as displayed in the manual there by locking the bearings to the tail slider all would make sense. Odd that it shows it in the manual. Maybe they found it too difficult to manufacture???.

Oh Yeah… I found a new problem with this tail design… There is another weak point in the pitch lever mount (see attached drawing). The flat head screw (2x6mm) used to mount the Pitch Lever Holder bracket seems to be a weak point in the design. The head snapped off of mine while it was on the ground (lucky) I know for a fact that this screw was not over tighten… It’s just a weak point in the design or a faulty screw. I replaced it with a socket head harden type as a precaution and all seem OK ( I feel a little better now but who know what else is in the future if these screws have weak heads). Funny… One of the reasons I purchased the Beam is because of the review in RC Heli. The comment in the review… “It would not be an exaggeration to say that the tail case is one the most elegant aspect of this design” I guess you could say it looks really nice (;-)

Same happened to me with the screw, the head is so small, that the phillips cross cuts cause a really weak point on the screw. Same screws hold the battery tray down, and I had 3 of those break, I would say to be safe, definitely swap out that tail bolt for something more reliable. My slider mount bolt broke during assembly, so, you dont have to listen to us, but if I saw this post, I might change mine out as well to avoid an uneccesary crash.....

But Honey, I can't live with just stock.....

I missed this threat last nite and I am interested as I am just now building the tail. The issue I ave is the "in and out play" on ball swivel. I tried removing and reinstalling to take out the play, but no luck. The bearing turns smoothly laterally, but I do not like the slop. Any one else notice this?
