e-Electric Batteries & Chargers > Suggestions for a charger....PLEASE HELP!!

Help. I am thinking of purchasing a charger, I just dont know which one. One of my buddies swears by the Lightning power charger (http://www.hobbycom.com/ProductDeta...ctCode=LP-E0102). But I have been doing a lot of research and kinda like the Bantam ones (both the BC6 and BC6-10). Which one is the best for the money and features? I would really like on with a "fast charge" function. If you know of a "better one", please include it too. Also, what else do I need to buy to make use of the charger? I know I need a power supply (where do I get a decent one), but what else? I am looking at purchasing some Air Thunder batteries (http://www.airthunder.com/2200mah11...terypack-1.aspx). Right now I only have a (factory) 3S battery to charge (when the heli get here). I hope to expand that sometime soon though. I am still a noob and waiting on my TREX 450 SE to arrive (ebay). While I'm waiting I thought I would buy a charger to use. So, I am at your mercy. Please help with your knowledge. Thanks for your help in advance.

Or what is your suggestion for batteries????

I just found a site on a Hyperion EOS0610iNET(http://media.hyperion.hk/dn/eos/EOS0610iNET-MAN-EN.pdf). They look like good battery chargers. Whats your opinion of them compared to the others listed above?

I am new to this and just looking to soak up all the information I can.

Thanks for your help......and sorry about all the noob questions.....

Hi

I use a Thunder power 610 charger. Not bad, what I liked is that it has a built in balancer whose connections can handle most makes of lipos.

It goes up to 6s at a 3.4 amp charge rate.

You may be find better responses by offering fewer, shorter, more direct questions, but I'll give it a shot:

Charger: For your charging needs and roughly the same price I would recommend a CellPro 4S

http://www.fmadirect.com/Detail.htm...2218§ion=45

or the iCharger 106B

http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/...?idProduct=6792

As far as lipos on the TRex go, there are more opinions that stars in the night sky. I have been running some 3S 2200 30C packs by Electrolite that womp all over more expensive packs I have tested by TP and FP. As far as longevity, that is still to be determined, but I have 30 cycles+ going and they are holding very strong.

If you have any other specific questions please ask.

Cheers,
David

If you choose the Hyperion (I'm getting one as soon as I can find someone to buy my 2 TP1010's with balancers), get the duo version that will do 2 lipo's at once. I looked at the one Ray Stacy got and it is the way to go. Charge up to 6S on each port and the balancer is built in. They are going in hobby shops and ebay for $260.

Thanks for the info. I'm sorry for all the options I put up here. They are just what I have been finding that I like. I haven't convinced myself that I like the dual chargers yet. But I am taking in all the info posted here. What's your suggestions on the Mega Power Infinity-960SR w/ Balancer 12S(https://www.unitedhobbies.com/UNITE...?idProduct=6301)? I really like what I'm seeing about it on their site, but don't know anything else about it. So, what do the heli Gods on here think of it? Good, Bad, Mediocre?? I don't care if its overkill, once i learn to fly I'll upgrade my heli and batteries in the future, I just want to know if its any good. I appreciate all the help this site offers and plan on becoming a regular. Thanks.

Don

P.S. I also plan on charging my NIMH/NICAD batteries from my trucks with it. No need to have 2 chargers for the wife to complain about.....but if I find one thats LIPO only thats best, I guess she'll have to live with 2.

Whatever you do don't even consider the TP-610C its a piece of garbage....
It won't charge NIMH neither NICD correctly. This charger always false peak unless you charge em at minimum amps... it won't even allow you to put a timer for peak detection.

BUt if you plan using only Lipos below 4S then you'll be ok.

Thanks for all the info. Keep it coming. I still havent made up my mind on what to get but you are giving good info.

I am kind of partial to the Mega Power Infinity-960SR w/ Balancer 12S(https://www.unitedhobbies.com/UNITE...?idProduct=6301). But I am starting to like the Cell pro 10S (http://www.fmadirect.com/new_applic...10s_charger.htm). I know from the feedback on here that this is a good charger, but how does it compare to the Mega Power one? I really like the Mega but dont want to buy it if its a waste of money.

Thanks for all the help you have to offer on here. This site rocks!!

I use the Hyperion 610i chargers and have been very pleased with them. My packs are 6S 5000's, and I use four in a 12S2P configuration. I tried other chargers (ie Robbe) that claim to be able to run 10 amp at 12S, and these are the only ones currently available that actually do that. The other versions do not have the watt capability. It is a little cumbersome to use the synch cords, but the units have performed flawlessly. If you go with the dual version, you are again limited by watts. If you ever plan on flying a larger system, I would strongly suggest that you go with one of these that will allow you to expand your capability as needed. The only downside to these chargers is that they do not cycle (or discharge) your nimh, etc. For that you still need another unit,...I use a triton every three months or so in that capacity. Good luck.

Now needing a 6S charger.

Update to the charger search. I just bought an ESMART 600. So I guess I need a charger that will charge up to 6S batteries.

Thanks for the help.

one small suggestion, if you're flying 600mm size electrics, look to something that can handle 12 cells at 5A min. I've seen power configurations that run from six cells to 12 fairly common. I just put together a 7.8lb heli w/620mm and I'm curring running 8 series and 6Ah on (2X 4S3P). I currently can only charge 4S @ 3A, so I'm trying to look to a new charger as well, and I want to move to A123. I've already blew up one pack in a crash (pulled the heli away before the flames kicked in). That's an expensive mistake.

Trooper mentioned Hyperion 610i . that looks tempting to me for what you're trying to charge.

You can charge TWO 6S packs at once (balancer built into unit)with this one.

Watts limiting factor

I'm just going to mention once again, a fact seems to keep being overlooked on this subject. All of these chargers are limited by watts. That is fine if you are only charging smaller packs or at minimal rates. Most of them are only 180 watts. Some are 220 watts. The Hyperion model that I mentioned allows you to hook two together in a fully synchronized system, thus allowing 500 watts, with full internal balancing at 12S. This allows a 12S 5000 to be charged at a full 10 amps. If you go with their current dual version model, remember that although it is a Hyperion, it limits you to lesser watts.(360w - not 500w) If you don't intend to ever utilize the larger packs, then the smaller ones should work fine for you. TP and others have assured me that they will be coming out in the near future with a higher wattage version, but they are not available as of yet.

I know you want to charge quickly, but 2C is not really recommended for lipo packs. I will stay with the manufacturers recommendations and take my typical 45-55 minutes to charge my packs (yes even 2 6S(5000mah) packs at 5 amps each).
