e-BEAM Beam E4 > Beam E4 Problems

Hi,

Dumped my Trex V2 and got a Beam E4 but I'm having a few problems.

The first is that I was unable to stop the boom from twisting in its mount during the maiden flight. It was tight! Any more and I would have stripped the threads. I tighened it back up to the point that I couldn't twist it by hand yet it still did it in flight and pulled the boom carbon supports from the ends. I just managed to get it down. Any ideas?

The second is that there is a vibration (on tail fin) that I cannot locate. What I do notice is that the main gear does not rotate perfectly smooth. there is quite a bit of up/down runout. Not sure if these issues are related.

Finally, I cannot get the tail slider smooth. It just feels notchy and "scratchy" on the output shaft and I think it is creating some resistance, which is making the tail servo having to work harder than it should.

Initial impresssion of this heli is good but the maiden didn't go to plan.

Any help/comments appreciated.

Cheers,

Andy

Hi, I have not had a problem with my tail boom or pitch slider but did notice the main gear issue. I have even tried 2 different gears with new bearings in each and the problem didn't go away. I believe some people are polishing the shaft on the tail and then reinstalling it. Check your belt and make sure you don't have it double twisted. This happened to me.

Hi Anders,
I had a similar problem with the tail slider. What I found was that the ball on the end of the slider was very tight in the mating hole of the bellcrank. I very slightly reamed it out until it fit perfect, (all my ball links needed to be loosened as well).
The vibration may well be from a bent tail rotor shaft. That tail is spinning REALLY fast, and the slightest bend of the shaft will cause some real bad high frequency vibrations, (I'd bet it's the vibs loosening the boom as well). If the shaft isn't bend, perhaps it's from unbalanced tail blades?
After rebuilding from a crash, I didn't realize that the tail shaft was bent slightly. The crash broke my vertical fin off which I glued back on and reinforced with strips of carbon from a broken TRex frame. The joint was really strong. When I spooled up, the tail was a tight blur of vibration, and the vertical fin went flying.
Hope this helps!

Eric Sanders

Anders:

Remove the tail hub, and remove the head & swash. Run the motor and feel for any vibration and feel the main shaft and tail shaft for any vibration or visual check. If none, then attach the head but not the blade and run. If no vibe, then attach the tail back on and run for vibe check. If none, then re-attach the main blade and run again.

This is how I go through for vibe tracking in electric helis.

Ok, polished the tail shaft and reamed the hole on the bell crank and the tail slider is now silllllkkky smooth. I also used some wet and dry on the end of the boom to stop it slipping.

Now the vibration. I removed the head and tail assembly and spooled up. The tail output shaft was fine but there was a blur on the top of the main shaft. Also the runout on the main gear looked excessive.

I stripped it down to find that that the one-way bearing sleeve & hub does not sit perfectly square to the main shaft. i think this is because there is too much play between the main shaft and the sleeve?

I also rolled the main shaft on some glass only to find that it is slightly bent. Also, the top block bearing is notchy. WTF, this is a brand new kit and has spent less than 30 seconds in the air.

I have ordered the parts but being in the UK it will take a while for them to reach me I am itching to get this bird flying

Man, except for the swash, my kit didn't have any of these problems.
