Radio - JR & Spektrum DSM > 9303 timer to idle up... HERE IS HOW!!!

So I was again flying today and again forgot to hit my timer switch. Man JR, you really missed the boat on this upgrade to your 2.4 9303.

Any hoo.

I was thinking how one could hardwire the timer on the idle up switch. I need someone with some electronics know how to think this through.

The Trainer switch is an on/off switch and once you hit it the timer turns on and if you hold it the timer coninues to run. It must be cycled for the timer to turn off.

NOW....what do you guys think about taking the wires off the trainer switch and soldering them to the idle up switch. In normal mode the timer would be off but when you hit idle up 1 or 2, depending on how you solder the wires, it would activate the timer also.

If I see this right and you solder the wires for idle up one it would not turn off unless you went to normal mode and back to idle up again (one complete cycle).

The great thing would be is it would start in idle up one (or 2) and just run until it times out. Than you would be in normal and should be able to clear it out via the buttons on the side of the screen.

Any thoughts ??? I hate to burn up another radio goofing around (don't ask)

O man,

You had to ask. Well it was a long hot day and I went to McDonald's to get a kids meal for my little girl (I only provider her with the best fired foods ) and they had a watch in the happy meal. Come to my surprise for $3.00 you not only get very tasty food you also get a watch with a backlit. I have complained in silence (not really ) about why don't our radios have backlits. It would make them so much easier to see everywhere.

So I had my DX7 and decided one day to try and backlit it. I really like the 12X because of this feature but can't get myself to spend the equivalent of 3 9303s right now on it. So I opened up my DX7 for the 10th time to study the screen and determined it could be done! Hey if they can do it on the older triton charger I can do it on the DX7. Well to make a long story short it went from bad to worse…I damaged the connecter of the screen, had to rewire it, solder here, solder there, nothing. The radio worked fine but there was no screen. Kinda made it hard to see what model setting you had

So I than bought the 9303 2.4 and later found a guy here that was wanting a broken DX7. In the end I bought his and changed out the board with screen and now have my DX7 working again!

Now I know how the connector works and could actually try this again, but I decided to leave well alone

Here are my adventures to this whole tale:http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...ghlight=tauscnc

The backlit project is not over...now we are working on the 9303 here

Actually, backlit displays are harder to see in daylight, which is when 99.9% of our flying is.

As far as the timer, why not just get in the habit of hitting the switch as you're spooling up?

I don't mean to squish your enthusiasm for cool mods, but I for one am putting you on my short list of who never to buy a transmitter from!

that's funny

Nah, I would never sell one of my transmiters that is... what is a good word for reworked??? gently used Is there a "transmitter fax" like the car fax for this stuff! hahahaha....

Yeah, hitting the switch would be the easist way but I just can't seem to remember. I will have to keep trying.

Almost there, just trying it out soon.

If JR can't come to the 21 century and offer such a basic option on one of the best 9 channels, then we must do it outselves

IT WORKS!! If JR won't fix it heck lets do it ourself!! Of course do this at your own risk

First a thanks to fireblade5437 (Alan) on rcgroups for helping me figure out how to do this and what switch to use.

I will have pics up very soon.

You need to go to Radio Shack (or somewhere) and get a DPDT 3 position switch. It should have 6 pins out of the bottom and be able to move in 3 steps like the orginal flight mode switch. Find the smallest one because there is not much room in the radio for it.

Solder the wires that go to the orginal switch the same on the new switch (blue, grey, and black) all on the same side... and on the OTHER side solder the timer wires to pins OPPOSITE of the blue and grey. It's a 10 min job!

Now (still) working on this a bit,,,but the timer will work if you go into Idle up 2. Not idle up one. If you solder the wires on the other pins, opposite of grey and black than it turns on after you cycle from idle up 1 back to normal.

So you could start your heli in normal, spool up into idle up 1 or just go right into idle up 2 and the timer will start. You can flip and flop between idle up 1 and normal all day and the timer will not turn off UNTILL you cycle back to idle up two.

I only use one idle up so I will just use 2 now!

IT WORKS ...... IT WORKS..... !!!!!!

Here are the pics:

6 pin DPDT center off switch from radio shack

Remove the 2 wires from the pic board of the trainer switch

Here is the new switch wires installed.

For this switch I had to cut these parts...yours may vaiy

All done

Awesome!

Nice work and all.. I was going to suggest this too.

However, what are you going to do when you wish to buddy-box someone?

Also..

to get around your issue where you wish to trigger the timer with ST1 or ST2 when coming out of normal mode, you could use a transistor and a few additional components to create the necessary pulse when your new switch is flicked out of normal mode. If you know what you're doing it should be fairly straight forward.

To take it a step further, you could do this all in parallel to the existing trainer switch so that you still have trainer capabilities. However you'd probably want a way to disable the flight mode feature in that scenario.

If I had a little more spare time, I'd make up a schematic for you.

Or...

One more idea I just had.. find a DPTT switch (Triple Throw) instead of a DPDT 3 position switch. This would have 8 contacts instead of 6 and would allow you to solder positions 2 and 3 together.

I didn't take the time to look, but Jameco or similar should have something like you're looking for.

I think most all of the 3 position double switches are DPDT center off.

Hey PilotDaz,

Thanks!!! I thought about the trainer issue too but in 20 years of flying I have yet to buddy box someone! Of course luck will have it that I need to this year right I really don't think I have...the fields I have been to have specific people that teach (fine with me and the last field had their own club trainer box. I think they got it from AMA ???

If I really need to (I might with my bro this year) I could just pull the wires off and put them back to the trainer switch. I also have a DX7, not that it is a fix, but I could use that as the buddy box.

I don't think an 8 pin switch will fit, the 6 pin is a tight fight. I flew today and it was AWESOME!!!

For the T-rex 450 it is a dream, I just go right into idle up 2 and the soft start starts to spool up the heli and the timer also starts.

On the nitro, not a biggie. I just got into Idleup 1 and than into 2. They are set the same.

The only thing I am having a problem with is the switch is rather stiff.

Either way I would love to see a schematic and see all the possiblities of how this feature could be done.

thanks again!

If you want to make it so that it works with either ST1 or ST2 when flipping out of Normal mode, you could use a small low mA relay and tap Positive and GND from the board.

Here's a schematic that would accomplish the task:

For a smaller less power-consuming method, substitute a switching transistor with an appropriately sized resistor.

Or...we could gang up and bitch to JR to fix this in firmware.
I could not believe they did not "fix" this when they came out with the X9303. It has been complained about since the XP9303 came out 3+ years ago.
All they had to do is add a beep on the minute coutdown like the 10x...
Don't hear the beep....you forgot your timer.

I cuss every time I forget it... $&#$*in JR

Ok,Ok, I bit the bullet and got the 12X and man it's awesome!! Timers, the BACKLITE screen, servo slow and a whole bunch of other stuff I will probably never use

Man my $30 foamies are gonna fly like a champ with this puppy!! hahah.

I am putting my 9303 2.4 back to normal (factory) and it's going up for sale!

anyone anyone?

A properly installed diode can also do the trick.

PilotDaz,

Thanks for the schematic!

AirWolfRC,

Really, how...that would be interesting. Probably easier too than shoving in the bigger switch.

Using the schematic above, a diode from the "normal mode pin" of the switch to the proper contact of where the relay contacts are shown with the band (cathode) of the diode away from the "normal mode pin".
