There are a ton of these posts, but to be clear?

What gyro are you running, gy401, IGC, telebee,

I know the 401 inside out now as well as the DX-7 since my tail wag issue

check out my posts!!

The hh mode locks the tail, it will not drift! out of hh mode the tail will drift.

most heli guys will not fly in non hh mode, just put in hh mode and go.

I know that with the DX-7 I use just the gear travel adjust to set the gain, I leave it in HH or avcs mode at between 58 and 66 on the upper portion of the travel adjust, below 50% travel will take the 401 out of hh mode, to little gain the tail wags, too much gain the tail wags or hunts, 66 on my raptor 30, 58 on the t-rex 450,

As the name implies "heading lock" or "heading hold".The gyro will keep the nose wherever you last put it.At first you will feel like you have to fly the tail more.in normal mode the tail will have a slight tendancy to weathervane durring turns requiring less stick input to complete a coordinated turn. Most guys I know of, myself included, use only heading hold mode.

Backwards flight or any type of 3D is very difficult in rate mode. It's fine for flying "scale" however.

Normal mode is actually called rate mode.

In rate mode the gyro dampens the 'rate' of unwanted tail motions. Hovering in a sideways wind is a great way to picture the difference. In rate mode, the crosswind will push the nose, though at a slow and controllable rate, so that the nose is pointed into the wind, also called weathervaning.

In heading hold mode the gyro will sense more wind and apply more correction so the nose stays put. If the wind decreases the gyro will give less correction. The gyro will work, right up to the mechanical limit of the tail rotor, to maintain its position.
