There is no shortage of any type of fuel, only speculators driving up the cost. The Market will determine the price, if you are willing to spend $25 for a gallon of Cool Power 30%, that that's what it will sell for, but if you cut back cause of the price, it will come down. Same thing will happen with Gasoline if the fools we elect will simply allow it to happen

When you consider that it contains the two most abundant gases that humans breath and expel why should it get to short supplyCLICK HERE

It is convenient to say that it is on shortage as the price rises. Nice excuse. Nitro could double in price tomorrow and I'd still buy fuel. I suspect most of my Heli Brethren feel the same. You think the suppliers know this? You bet your arse they do. And so it goes. No one said helis were cheap.

Happy Flying!

I might have to find one of those Webra engines and run 0% nitro. Either that or make the stuff out of my basement.

While there is no shortage right now at all, there is certainly the potential for one. With only a literal handful of NM manufacturers in the entire world, there is only ONE in the United States, the others are primarily in China with only one importer getting it to the states. The US manufacturer of Nitromethane has already stopped supplying top fuel and all of racing back in 2006 (they run pure 100% nitromethane) due to the homeland security protocol since Timothy McVeigh decided to go to a dragstrip and buy a few thousand dollars worth of nitromethane and mix up the explosive used in the Oklahoma city atttack. They as of right now will only supply pure nitromethane to agricultural and medical users in its pure state and to model fuel manufacturers who agree to dilute it to less than 55% purity. Which in comparison to most of us running 30% seems like no big deal to us..... and with drag racing now not getting many thousands of gallons per year, you would think they would have a surplus of NM. The truth is, rumor is swirling that this said US manufacturer is considering not supplying ANYONE other than medical and agricultural needs. Now there is where the shortage would arise if it was going to at all. It is thought that the few (and I mean just a FEW) Foriegn manufacturers of the molecule (NM) could'nt possibly keep up alone. Not to mention the monopoly in our specific market they would have. So while the situation is just fine right now, it will be interesting to see where this leads.... But dont panic yet. Sorry for the long winded paragraph, I'm slow at work.

I'm thinking if the dragster guys can still get it by the zillion gallons they use, what the model industry needs is but a drop in the bucket by comparison.

The problem is this, When or if, (remember the swirling rumor) the sole US manufacturer of NM ceases production all together and the foriegn suppliers are then supplying the medical and agricultural needs in the US first (which yields much higher profits for them) the drag racers and the modelers will be left high and dry. As I posted earlier, right now everything is cool, we get to use the US manufacturers product, who also supplies the US med/Ag NM and the racers are using Chinese NM. The problem will arise if these small manufacturers overseas become the only supplier world wide. The US government by ways of homeland protection are making nitromethane usage very difficult in the states. The US manufacturer is a branch of a major chemical manufacturer and NM is by no means any huge share of their cash cow, so for them to keep dealing with pressure from the US government about the handling, manufacturing and distribution of just ONE of their products, it is not too far fetched to believe they may sacrifice a part of their income and dedicate that facility to manufacture something a little less restrictive in those buildings.

I read an article a few days ago on one of the Drag racing sites. The story said that there are three mfgs in China that supply NM. Only one supplies the grade for racing which is also the only one suitabe for rc fuel. The story reported that all three companies have been shut down temporarily during the olympics. They are supposed to start production again in October of this year. The story went on to say that there could be a real problem having enough NM for NHRA to get through this years season. I'll see if I can find a link to the article.
If this story is accurate, there is a real chance of a shortage!

Matt

Here's the link, I got a few things slightly wrong but the gist of the article doesn't look good if true for the near future.

I race so I follow it pretty heavily and can honestly say I think fuel prices are going to go way up in the next few months. The government passed a law that says that one person cannot have more then 40 gallons of unopened nitro in one place at one time which is where the drag racers get screwed. They have to apply to a permit and submit themselves to a search whenever neccasary. The one plant in the US and I think its Dow chemicals has stopped producing large quantites based on the governmental restrictions so right now most of what we are getting is coming out of China which has stopped producing because of the Olympics and the terroristic oppurtunities. The couple of top fuel racers I talk to are complaining that nitro for them has gone up from 900 a barrel to 3000 a barrel.

Another issue is that one of the large NM manufacturers in china has to shut down for 8 weeks during the olympic games. Most all manufacturing in china around beijing is shut down for the same reason. They are trying to reduce pollution as the athletes were concerned.. actually affecting some of the items we are relying on for business as well..

Wow, clearly someone who listens only to the media. And do you think that every onther retailer that you shop at doesn't get product from China....if you do, you live in a bubble.

Unfortunately that is the way the economy is. Wal-Mart actually does a very good job of trying to "spread the wealth" and not rely solely on one area. In this day and age, in order to keep costs down, the retailers have to get product where the best price is. It isn't so much Wal-Mart that is pushing it as it is the suppliers.
