e-Century Hummingbird - Swift > SWIFT 16 - CNC Grips & Rotortech blades thickness compatibility

Hello,

I am just preparing my 2nd Swift 16, but this one is equipped with the full CNC metal head. My problem is the following :

- the CNC grips offer a 11mm width for blades.

- as Rotortech 560' are not available, I have booked Rotortech 550 models.
==> do you know their thickness : 11 or 12 mm ???

==> in case of problem, do you know the thickness of MAH 555mm blades ?

Best reards,
Gilles

The blades are 12mm.

11mm is an odd-ball size and no blades are available in that size. Either it’s just a tight fit or your grips are bent. I’m sure they are intended to fit 12mm blades.

Yes the Century CNC grips is 12mm and designed for 12mm blades!
Yours have got to be bent or really tight.

Thank you a lot for such a fast answers !

OK, I will bent a little the grips when I will install blades.
(just received answer from ESPRIT Models : the Rotortech 550 box has just started its travel...)

From your experience, RotorTech 550 & 560 are comparable ?

my grips are very tight against the maverik 550s i am using. i sort of had to force it in (for my plastic grips, it didn't require any effort).

not sure if that is going to cause any problems. i have had about 12 flights on it with no problem at a headspeed of about 2400

The 550 and 560 blades have different performance. 550 blades are a but softer and good for smooth sport flying. The new 560 blades are better for 3D.

Hello,

I have checked and noticed that my 12mm blades were too tight in the CNC Grips, with a major risk of failure : I have come back to plastic grips, mounted on the CNC head body.

No problem with the plastic grips, my rotortech 550 blades are happy !

Best regards,
Gilles

If you spin those plastic grips at 2000+ headspeeds and 550mm blades, you will most likely have a grip failure.....Ron

My head speed is ~2100rpm.

I am very confident in the plastic grips at this rpm, but not at all in the CNC one : their arms are bent by the blade thickness.

I am really desapointed with CENTURY CNC parts quality, especially the CNC rotor head (and I don't talk about the ball bearing parts accuracy, already discussed in many posts)

I will inform you if I observ pb of realibility with plastic grips.

(for instance, Predator grips are also plastic-made. All depends their stiffness).

Best regards,
Gilles

I am just lettng know about some of the experiences others have had with that same scenario. I owned 2 Swifts and I used the CNC grips with Rototech 550mm, 560mm, and Maverick blades. Best of luck though.....Ron

Thank you very much for your advice. I will be careful !

-> Did your CNC grips well adjusted with 12mm blades, or same problem as mine (blades bending the grip plates) ?

I have turned my Swift 16's at 2150 using the stock plastic blade grips for over 100 flights with the lighter RT515mm and FK530mm blades - no problems.

I now have 68 flights on my Swift 550 with the much larger and heavier RT560 blades at 1950 and no problems.

Note: the plastic blade grips on the first production run of the Swift 16s, a few years ago, were lighter duty units then the ones on all subsequent production runs.

It seems to me that Century CNC grips (or at least, some batches) have slightly wrong dimensions. Mine were about 11.5mm. I had to carefully file the grips a bit in order to fit 12mm blades.
