How do you guys go about setting the mesh on your crown gear? After you are done, do you re-zero the rotor head after wards since the whole main mast moves up or down and the head block with it?

I just loosen the two set screws on the tail drive gear, slide it back towards the tail, put a strip of paper between it and the crown gear, slide the drive gear back forward, tighten setscrews, remove paper. I don't mess with up/down on the main/crown gears and mast stoppers. You shouldn't need to do any vertical alignment.

Hello,

Since most of the time the pinion gear stays in place and aligned with the crown gear, for full tooth contact, I try not to adjust it again. I replace the crown gear (if stripped, damaged or worn), slide the main shaft down with gears installed, insert a single strip of paper between crown/pinion teeth, slide the main shaft up, tighten the collars, remove paper, verify no slop along main shaft and check pitch range.

Hope this helps.

Chachin..

Crown Gear...

Everyone seems to have a different approach to the mesh of the crown gear...Until recently I have never had a crown gear strip on me in flight ...I had one go on me last week but it was because I acquired a used ION X and didn't check the mesh closely after I got it..

I consulted with a few other MIN AIR gurus here and consensus is that you should have ZERO lash on the crown gear.

I always set mine to zero lash and have NEVER had an issue ...what I do is just loosen up the 2 main shaft collars and pull the head upwards until the lash is zero and retighten...if it's a bit too tight a couple of flights and some silicone spray will help the gear to "break in"..

I NEVER adjust the rear pinion gear...that should never change..

This has been working for me...I like to fly hard 3D and find that ZERO lash is the only way to avoid stripping during hard 3d piro flipping moves...

No worries about pitch range and effect on pitch ...you're only talking about a change of less than .5mm in main shaft height..

I thank you all for the input. I have replaced 5 crown gears total between my Straty and the X2. One was a botched Auto, one was like Jag just talked about (used Ion, never checked it initially), and the rest I think were my fault for too loose a gear mesh.

This last one however, I put about 26hrs on it while I was in Iraq. It had held up just fine, dust and sand included, till this week when I V-barred my rig. I have been working through a tail issue that turns out to be a sensor mounting problem. The tail stops pretty hard and the last two flights I have heard that familiar crackle at the end of a prio. I set the machine down and post flight revealed a word crown gear with a few low teeth. I am replacing it in the morning and remounting the sensor.

I posted here just out of curiosity to see how others are setting the mesh. I have never heard of the ZERO mesh "method" but I think I will give that a go. Do you have a name or link for the silicon spray you are talking about? Is this something I can get at a local hardware store?

Thanks again for everyone who has added so far.

Lou

loose main shaft collars, pull upwards so you get zero lash, then move the lower collar upwards VERY VERY little, 0.1mm or so, just so you dont get tension on the gear but still no visible lash.

I use silicone spray from time to time if needed.
(not needed on the nitros since they are self-lubricating)

Havent stripped one since except when I got about 6 revs/sec on my tail gyro setup

Alright campers,

I have a new crown gear installed and I was very anal every step of the way. I cleaned all the mounting hardware and even numbered the holes on the gear to make sure it got torqued evenly. Any how I will check my pitch ranges in the morning and I will let her rip as soon as the weather breaks. Word.
