Thought I would pass this on in case anyone else would like to save a couple of bucks. With fuel prices on the rise, my last oil change was my 30,000 mile. So, I had to do all the usual, spark plugs, rotate tires, check this and that and replace the air filter. I did a bit of reading and decided to buy a K & N air filter for my car. I am driving a 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser, 4cy auto, non turbo.
I have checked my fuel mileage and it actually works. I was getting about 22 mpg/city and 27 highway. Now I am getting 25 mpg/city. I am getting 3 more miles per gallon. A small way to save and the filters are not cheap. But it will pay for itself. There was a slight increase in power as well. It's working for me, may work for you too. Good luck.

... but they're the last air filter you'll buy for a vehicle. Ya clean 'em and re-treat 'em yourself every 20k miles (5-10k in off-road or dusty conditions).

Excellent air filter.

i dont see how you would be getting better fuel consumption, i have had lots of different cars, mostly performance cars, whenever i have put different air filters on (i prefur pipercross) i have had a drop in fuel consumption, due to the more air the engine is taking in

Better save the money from the increased fuel milage...to put towards the new engine...from all the dirt the K&N filter is letting in..

It's always amaizing the marketing tricks people fall for.

It's OK....It's not your fault !!!

I have heard of people having transmission problems when using K&N filters actually. Basically the oil can get on the MAF sensor and cause the transmission to start acting up. Eventually it can damage the transmission. GM had some TSBs about this and from what I remember they won't warranty the transmission if that type of filter is used.

They also let in more dirt I,ll never buy another KN filter.

I had them on my 88 ford and on my 02 ZX12R and i found dust in both

Properly prepared and maintained, K&N Filters are among the best air filters available anywhere for cars or trucks. Do you imagine that CORR racers and other pro offroad competitors would use them in dusty or muddy conditions -- on +$100k 800 hp engines -- if they were substandard? Not likely.

My Jeep goes everywhere, along some of the dustiest roads and trails in the desert SW, and I wouldn't use any other brand of filter to protect my engine.

If your vehicle was inhaling dust then you didn't prepare the element properly, or you didn't take care to create an airtight seal where it attaches.

seen it a million times most "issues" with a k&n is due to user error failure to properly oil if they even oil the filter.

They are suitable for competion only.
Washed, cleaned and re-oiled after each race day.

On a private vehicle, bad idea unless you spend a lot of your time cleaning them.
Not advisable on any carbureted engine on a private vehicle as they provide no flame arresting as a standard air filter does.
In same places they may not be legal mod becuase you have removed the intake silencer.

K&N make airfilters to fit right inside the stock airbox's which are legal. and dont require any more then a standared dry filter does. Justwhen you go to clean them take a bit longer then just changing a dry filter out for a new one.

yea

I could not agree more on filters and for that matter tire pressure for helping more miles out of a vehicle. I could prove it when I had my limited explorer with how much each fillup was when I went to see my parents. After the K&N I could prove about 2 gallons better. Not as much with my pathfinder. I wondered if it was the torqe of the v8 benifited more or the design of the vehicle benifited more with less restriction. I am sure each vehicle varies. They do work though and are worth it in my humble opionion.

I have parked my truck and have been driving my super cool "Festiva" to help on gas. Maybe I will put a K&N on it

I wonder if some of the increased MPG had to with the new plugs, rotated tires (tire pressure), etc.

due to the more air the engine is taking in

the engine doesn't take in or reject a certain amount of air as it sees fit. An engine can, ideally, be thought of as an air pump with a combustion chamber in the middle. An airfilter is a means to restrict the airflow through that air pump. If the filter can be made so as to negligibly restrict the flow of air while still cleaning the air then it will increase the efficiency of the pump.

An increase in efficiency will also increase AVAILABLE power. Your decrease in fuel mileage was more likely due to the higher available power under your right foot thus causing more stompage from stand-stills.

I just put an AEM filter on my car and I have noticed a 1mpg increase in fuel economy over my 110 mile round trips to and from work.

twistedrotor, well darn, I was axcited about the increased mileage, I really forgot about the other stuff I had done. I keep up on my tires but with changing the plugs, that could have helped some. All good points there. All I know is, I seen an increase in mileage and I was happy about it. Some good points and some not so good on the K&N. I guess if your thinking about trying one, do your homework. I personally do not drive in dusty conditions. But how much dust do we encounter around here, who knows for sure.

Makes me think about how much dust is getting into a heli engine while it is flying around the field, usually near or over a farmers field. What about while it is idling or hovering close to the ground kicking up dust. Makes me appreciate the airfilter on my heli's even more now.
