Im sick of this dang thing. I got rid of the mavrikk blades, I upgraded to a v2 entire head assy and grips and everything is balanced and tracked but it just woofed again, forward flight descent around zero pitch. Shook so hard my fuel tank dislodged. Iv read about the grip flip so will that help? Any pointers on the grip mod?

What in the heck have I gotten myself into?

garaptor-
Let's start with are you running a Governor or have you ever checked RPMS with a opti-tach? You may find your woof is caused by over-revving the blades without enough bite (pitch)....
Why, I did it! I researched everything, as you have done and the answer was as simple as the Throttle to pitch curve ratio....
It's a long explanation but I would first look there before you go chasing some mechanical error. How about some info?
-How much pitch (Positive to negative)
-How much throttle on the pitch
Think of it this way, IF you do not have enough bite (Pitch) and you run a leaner mixture with a "strong" throttle curve you can cause the woof to occur. Let us know what your set at on your 30.

Runnin OS32 ,no govenor, pitch -6 to +9, rpm about 1800 at a hover, fiberglass blades and it DOES overspeed in a descent for some reason.Throttle curve is pretty steep from +5 on up to 100% at +9

the raptor hovers better at +6 and take the max to +10
try lowing the head speed to around 16-1700
and you may find your low end mixture is a little on the lean side thats why its over speeding in a descent

the big bad woof could be the soft dampeners in the head

First things first.......

Check your blade axle as they are known to bend due to the violent woof you described..... If you don't check this and continue to diagnose, try this and try that, you are WASTING your time !!!

Secondly, if the heli has ever been involved in a crash, you must check ALL of the ball link screws that are up in the head, specially your blade grip ball screws..... They WILL bend and will not be noticable with a visual inspection.... You MUST begin to unscrew the screw in order to check them.... as you start to unscrew them, a bent one will wobble..... very visible !! This takes only a few minutes as you don't have to completely remove them in order to perform this check....... Again, if you don't do this you are again WASTING your time doing anything else because if you have a bent screw, it will unexpectedly cause your blades to go out of track in flight and it WILL cause the dreaded woof !!!

Thirdly, the other suggestions you received are good BUT.......

The reason you can get the "woof" when you overspeed is because there is slop in the control system.... you need to find that slop and greatly reduce and eliminate it.... Start at the pitch servo and ensure that it is FIRMLY secured in the frame !! A simple thing as a loose or slightly loose pitch servo can lead to the woof....

After the servo, check ALL of the linkages between the servo, pitch arm and the rest of the linkages between the swash and the head.... you're looking for slop. Check your washout arms... a worn unit can get quite sloppy and can cause problems.... Also check that the screws in that unit are tight..... Same goes with anything that pivots up at the head..... any loose pivot arm or component is not good !!

And lastly, go to the first step !! I want to stress the point that if your blade axle is bent, you need to find that and correct that problem first !! There are simple ways to check it but I would suggest you take the blade grips off and remove it so that you can roll the axle on a flat surface.... if it's bent or even slightly bent, you'll be able to "see and hear" it..... while you're at it, lube the dampners , re-grease your thrust bearings and AND MAKE SURE you install them with the washers in their proper orientation !! Installing them (or one) wrong can cause the woof too.....

Good Luck !! and let us know what you find !

Thanks. I will go into it today. The spindle, grips, bearings, were all new, never crashed, but Ill have to take everything apart since the flutter was so severe. The dampners greased and I triple checked the stackup on the thrust bearings. Im sure 1)it was overspeeding and 2)Ive got some slop in the system somewhere. I found a ton of info on Michaels site here..http://www.raptortechnique.com/troubleshooting.htm
EDIT Well,I found the dampners dry. They are such a tight fit I just worked with them over and over till I got it saturated. Also found thrust washer(very thin,about.010) on inside instead of outside of thrust bearings.Bearings and feathering shaft ok. Found servo mount screws not very tight at all. Found some play in swash.Didnt find the smoking gun. Will retune low speed screw and bring rpm down.

What in the heck have I gotten myself into?

garaptor,

Sounds like you found a few things wrong, all of which can contribute to your problem.....

Unfortunately, you won't be able to find out exactly what was causing the problem because you're "fixing" several things at the same time......

Let us know the results after you take corrective action and have a chance to fly it again....
