Well, one of our family friends wants to get a plane. He has only breifly tried my simulator and is dying to get the real thing, im not sure if he wants nitro or electric, and i dont really think he cares either. Just wonder what would be the better choice for someone of his age, with(im guessing) not a ton of funds. i was thinking a like .15 size trainer...

maybe try to steer him towards helis after i see how he is witht he plane...

parkzone super cub flies pretty good, and parts are cheap.

Alpha Trainer from Horizon if you go glow. Buddy box cords in the kit. RTF with everything. Build time about 3 hrs if that.

Just if you go glow and buddybox

I was 15 when I got my first .40 size trainer. You dont want to get him too small an airplane becuase it will be difficult to see in the air. Another bad characteristic of anything small that flies is stability. Obvoiusly the larger the better.

The Nexstar is perfect for first timers and its like 300 bux RTF with radio and engine. Comes with a Copilot also.

a .15 trainer will be one of the worse things you can do get a 40 size at the least. You can convert it to electric if you want just buy the arf and go from there. bigger planes fly little planes flit. the smaller the plane the harder it is to fly.

I will second the nexstar, the one I got even came with a stripped down version of realflight that allowed you to sim with the nexstar.

Third for the Nexstar!

It's the best training system ever. I have soloed several students on their forth flight with Nexstar, nothing else even comes close. After they learn the basics, the Nexstar makes a great sport aerobatic plane. Even with it's Clark Y airfoil, it will fly inverted and do outside loops.

if you want durability

get a Dura Plane!! My buddy and I got tired of rekitting our first planks and bought a pair of those. YOU COULD NOT BREAK THEM!!!
We'd crash 'em 4-5 times a day because we were trying stuff beyond our abilities because crashing didn't matter. Super cheap and could do basic aerobatics. Even after we advanced to 300's and Ultimates, we kept these around just to crash em up and chase each other around in a little combat action. UGLY as sin is the price you pay though.
I just checked and they're still making them. Actually 2 new models as well. Go to: Duraplane.com

PS - and the trike gear BLOWS. We just took the gear off and hand launched.

I started out in 6th grade, now ending my sophomore year in college, with a slightly modified Sig Kadet Senior. I had a blast with that thing and I still fly it once in a while because it is so fun. But I would also say the Sig Kadet Lt 40 would be a good choice too.

I LOVE MY EVO!!!

Nexstar

There are definitely worse choices than a Nexstar

Listen, I'm not trying to say I know everything there is to know about this hobby, but I'll tell you this. I've been flying these things since 1974. I've taught more folks to fly than I can remember. (folks who know will say that doesn't mean a whole lot since he can't remember squat anyway!) There is no such thing as a .15 size 'trainer'. To small to see at a reasonable height for learning. Wing loading is generally so high that they have to fly wide open all the time just to stay in the air.
Get some that's built to FLY and NOT built to CRASH and your learning curve will accelerate like you won't believe.

If this person REALLY wants to learn to fly, then let me suggest this:

1) A large airplane with a flat bottom wing, low wing loading, and will fly just fine on a 46. Something that flys slow (gives you a little time to think) and that you can still easily see 3 mistakes high. I've flown a lot of these so-called trainers. For your money you'd be hard pressed to find anything easier and more FUN to fly than a Sig Kadet Senior ARF. You don't need anything fancy for a radio with the Kadet, however if you do have a computer radio with mixing, once you've got some time under your belt, you can turn the Senior into a pretty fun airplane for what it is. My son still has the one he learned on in the 6th grade. (He soled with it the third time out to the field by the way) It will do rolling circles all day long with an old worn out Thunder Tiger 46.

2). Some qualified help to get this person going in the right direction. This is just as big a factor in success as choosing the right aircraft.

I agree with larger trainers...and a .46 should be a minimum.

BUT also where you will be able to fly this plane and how often is another determining factor.

The Sig Kadet Senior is a great flyer...you might also want to consider a Telemaster...

http://www.hobby-lobby.com/telemaster.htm

Now being a sixth grader makes him already about 11-12?

Food for thought...building from a KIT has the following benefits:

teaches him...to follow directions; patience; building skills; manual dexterity; critical thinking; ability to solve problems and or trobleshoot, goal setting; and be the cool kid that can make planes as well...and maybe missed a few BUT ABOVE ALL...it will teach him how to repair and or build the next one for pennies on the dollar versus an ARF.

finally...one more link

Sig Kadet Senior. The plane can almost fly itself. Very popular plane at our field.

My vote is for a 48" wing. Fast agile, yet easy to fly and stable at low speeds. The EPP ones are also almost indestructible. I destroyed batteries when I crashed my XE2 yet the plane was still perfectly fine.

Get a life? How the hell do you fly a life?
