I would double check your servo. I had the same exact issue and went through a ESC, gyro and anything else ever mentioned. I ended up buying a cheap futaba 3154 and problem was solved. Sucks too since the Airtronics 94761 was only a few months old. Just wanted to throw that out there. Might be worth double checking.

I am using the ATV on the gear channel and its set at 58 by the way. Holds great.

Verify gear channel on transmitter

I had a problem awhile ago where I tried every gain setting in the book but the tail still wagged. I discovered that I was making gain settings on ch7 of my transmitter instead of ch5.

Here's a simple test. You are using the GEAR channel for gain, right? First go to the monitor screen on your transmitter and confirm that channel 5 moves when you toggle the GEAR switch on the transmitter. If it doesn't, then the GEAR switch needs to be activated. If the monitor shows your GEAR channel moving when you flip the switch, then you will want to set the endpoints so that one is above 50 (for HH) and the other is below 50 (for rate mode). You should be able to see what mode you are in on the 401 - the red LED on the gyro will be ON for HH mode and OFF for rate mode.

The gyro will want to be initialized in HH mode, and I suggest you do all your flying in this mode.

Hope this helps!

Helikirk, right now the radio is set up (HH 30%) & (rate mode 50%) the + (Switch away from user) is rate mode and the - (switch towards user) is HH

When I switch to rate mode the tail wags alot more nothing I tried helped so far

the switch is active

Knowing the switch is active is a good start

Now you know that if the gyro gain lead is plugged into ch5 in your Rx, then you should have remote gain control.

It is not the switch position (+ or -) but the ATV setting that determines what mode your gyro is in. If you wanted, you could even set it so that both switch positions give rate mode (if both endpoints are set below 50%). I couldn't see why you'd want to do this, but it is possible.

The effective gain is how far the ATV setting is from 50%. A gain setting of 70% in HH is equivalent to a setting is 30% in the rate mode. Both are 20% away from 50%.

What I do is set the + switch setting to a HH value of 75% (and always initialize your gyro in this switch position - red LED will be on) and set the - switch setting to a gain value of 25%. All my 401s are set up this way. Generally, I only use rate mode to set limits or snap the tail rotor pitch back to neutral before taking off, but always fly in HH mode.

on my trex 450 the ball is 7.5mm from center.I had tail wag problems as you are until I put it this close. It wont matter how much gain you pull out if the ball is too far out the 401 will hunt.

Another UPDATE:

Today I changed the servo to a futaba S9257, changed the rudder out put shaft, inspected linkages, belt, belt tention, even for the hell of it removed the carbon boom and installed the aluminum

out come NO CHANGE! still have a slight side to side wag maybe a 16th of an inch each way looks more like a viboration

Gy401 Good
Servo New
Belt Good
Bearings Good
Linkage Good
Mounted rudder control rod linakge ball 7.5mm from center hole on servo

need more idea's guys???? I'm out about $85 so far and still have the wag

I think the problem is your gain settings

RcNutTz - see my earlier post. Did you try setting the + switch position to 75% and the - switch position to 25%? Have you confirmed that you can switch between heading hold and rate modes? Once you do this then you can vary the rates and see the difference in the gyro performance. Then you can set it so it doesn't wag and be done with it.

From what you are saying, I don't think it's a mechanical setup issue.

Another Update

Last night I was adjusting the gain flying bring it down to adjust again and noticed that at half stick there is 2 head speeds in the same mode at time when I spool up its the lower speed I have all the wag/viboration and when it spools up in the higher head speed I dont have any of the wag tail is locked solid! gain is in the 75-80% range

(thanks for all the gain setting help think that was 1/2 the problem)

what I dont get is the 2 speeds in the same mode I'm not hitting any switches just spooling up???? bad esc???? or not setup right?

I got all this used and dont have the manual, any one else have this problem?
