| Knowing the switch is active is a good startNow you know that if the gyro gain lead is plugged into ch5 in your Rx, then you should have remote gain control.
It is not the switch position (+ or -) but the ATV setting that determines what mode your gyro is in. If you wanted, you could even set it so that both switch positions give rate mode (if both endpoints are set below 50%). I couldn't see why you'd want to do this, but it is possible.
The effective gain is how far the ATV setting is from 50%. A gain setting of 70% in HH is equivalent to a setting is 30% in the rate mode. Both are 20% away from 50%.
What I do is set the + switch setting to a HH value of 75% (and always initialize your gyro in this switch position - red LED will be on) and set the - switch setting to a gain value of 25%. All my 401s are set up this way. Generally, I only use rate mode to set limits or snap the tail rotor pitch back to neutral before taking off, but always fly in HH mode.
