Century Hawk - Falcon - Raven - Predator > Hawk sport failure

I'm here to ask for help with my hawk sport.

I have an old hawk sport with an os .32, I bought it years ago, and had to mothball it when I had a kid, simply diddn't have time for it. Now, 5 years later my kid goes to the field with me.

The tail seems to be the achilles heel. I've had problems with it stripping in the past, and yesterday after doing a few piros... well she decided go from steady tail in to full on piro. Something in the tail broke. I have not cracked it open so I don't know if its the gears stripping(again) or the wire in the tail snapped. It was under no load when the failure happened... so I'm a little pissed.

I recently found a thread on upgrading the head on the cheap to a thicker spindle, I already ordered those parts. It also looks like the hawk sport has a torque tube, but those plastic gears, can anything be done about them? Can I convert to TT?

Should I just pull the gyro, and dump this heli? Should I grab a hawk pro with the toki .40, and transfer the parts, or is this baby fixable? It really has little power with the .32, I'm sure I need to tune it better... but well, I'm not sure how much I will get out of it anyway.

I would really like to salvage this baby, but I don't want to spend too much since I'm mid build on my t-rex 500. The damage wasn't too bad... and it seems cheap to fix.... what to do?

just my 2 cents

buy a Hawk pro at 209$ you may be better off parts wise.

Toki looks like a good deal but I don't have 1 I am using an OS37
I also recomend losing the stock muffler that comes with

so with that being said the Hawk pro with Toki and pipe combo
would be my choice

You can say what you want , Just don't say it here!

Sounds like you and I had the same failure. I had the set screw come loose on the wire drive. Usually the wire drives are pretty "set and forget." I got tired of waiting for a hawk pro torque tube, so i converted mine to an align 600 torque tube and never looked back. If you buy the upgrade kit, i think i paid 99$. To complete the mod, i had to buy the front transmission torque tube coupler from century and dremmel out a X that fit the align part. You also have to cut a small piece of the hawk tail boom to fit between the align and the main frame. I secured mine with a little jb epoxy and viola. The 600 tail is awesome. Way more control. I custom fit the Hawk tail fins so it somewhat looks stock.
Whew! To answer your question one must look within (your checkbook) and find what drives you. Tear down the Hawk, find the failure and add the parts cost. New kits are good, lots of hawks here on rr for sale. (thats where i would go to get another.)

Toki

I have the Toki and pipe, I've been very happy with the power.

Definately go for the hawk pro, much better heli, and cheap to fix. I have to say from experience, that the Toki has MUCH more power than the 32, its a nice upgrade, especially if you get the toki pipe as well...The whole combo is just over 300 bux (maybe 350), and it flies just as good as any 30, and has a REAL Torque Tube.

those plastic gears, can anything be done about them?

There is actually a upgrade that you could do. The gears now come in metal. You can replace these.

Can I convert to TT?

You sure can. THat's the beauty of these brand.

IMO, I'd keep the heli, purchase a new Hawk PRO with the Toki 40 and Toki pipe. Keep the Hawk Sport for parts as many of the parts will fit the Hawk PRO. My own Hawk PRO has the Toki combo and I am very, very satisfied with it's performance. Blows away manu of the 30 size helis at my field!

Good luck on your decision.

hrm looks like a new hawk pro in my future.... I think I should upgrade the servos while I am at it... maybe.

I'm running it with S3003 servos now... is it worth it to upgrade them? What do you guys recommend? I'll definately keep the 401... and drop the FMA autopilot.

I could always upgrade the servos later... are there any used hawk sports out there for sale?

Yeah, get rid of the S3003. You'd be better of with some newer equipment. As far as Hawk SPorts for sale, you can do a search here and also on eBay.

What do you guys recommend for servos? I have a 401, I wouldn't mind upgrading to digital servos, but I don't want to spend too much on servos since I'm going to go with the new hawk pro kit too.

Anything special for the tail?

why not go ahead for the raven 50?
I too had an old hawk and when I looked into the hawk pro, I went for the raven and hyper 50 and never looked back!

Try for a 9253, or 9254 for the tail, those will give you great response. As for cyclic, youve got alot of choices. Id say for the best bang for the buck...Check out the JR ST126MG. 125oz or torque, .21 speed, all metal gears, and only 35 bux each! Of course you could get 3151s, or anything like that.

I have a 4 year old hawksport and i think it is the best bird ever
once you work out the bugs. Drill and pin your bevel gear, it's good
that you have a torque tube, pickup tail gear set HW6075 it is a metal
gear set.i have done this to my hawk and have yet to have tail failure.
On servo's went with futaba 9255's on throttle 9254, on tail 9256.
i went over kill with a 601 gyro. My main rotor is a predator all
metal head, and did many other things but i like the hawksport.
I pured alot of money into this bird but that is the hobby.

Enjoy the hobby.

get yourself some of these from where you like

http://www.servocity.com/html/hs-56...ital_speed.html

I bought those and love em, fast, lots of torque

I can pick my heli up by 1 servo arm "with the power on of course"
with 3 of them they have more torque than you'll ever need

131 oz-in = 8.0792 lbs of torque

You can say what you want , Just don't say it here!

the Hawk pro is a good little bird, but I agree you should think about buying the Raven for only 100 more, it comes with about $250 in upgrades,,

you could build the Raven as a 30 but you would need these 30 parts,,

1) Boom & Torque Tube,,
2) 550 blades,
3) 3mm Hawk Fly Bar & control arm parts

you could fly it ether Mccpm (Hawk) or Eccpm (Raven),,

yes it may cost a bit more but if you did it that way you would have,,

1),, nice Metal Swash
2),, 6mm Spindle
3),, 6mm Thrust Bearings,
4),, tail Thrust Bearings,
5,,) Metal Rotor Block,
6),, the Auto Unit,
7),, larger Fuel Tank,
8),, Metal Clutch Bell,
9),, HD Landing Struts,
10,, HD skids,
11,, rear Rudder Servo Mount

if built as a 30 you could sell the 600 Carbon blades that come with the Raven kit, that would get you some money back..

Just like most of the guys here suggest, if you are going to upgrade, a Raven would be a good investment. As Jim (Wasp) mentioned, the kit comes with alot of added stuff. As far as upgrading your existing Hawk, IMHO, I wouldn't bother.

As far as servos go, I used Futaba S9252s for the control surfaces and I would use a 9254 or 9253 for the tail servo. There are shops that offer "specials" on bulk purchases of the Futaba S9252 (RonLund Hint, Hint)

it would cost less to buy a Raven50 and put a 30 size tail on it if you wanted a 30 size Raven.

I bought a friends wrecked Raven 50 and used my Hawk pro to make a Raven 30

Was supposed to be my super Hawk project but turned into a Raven30
I don't plan on putting in a hyper50 anymore since I got a Toki muffler now it has all the power I want and is very light weight just under 8lbs fueled with a 500 tank and header tank
My flight times are about 25 minutes

hmm I just noticed I don't have pics with large header tank

This is where I put my header tank it fit in the canopy and keeps the fuel level with the carb. it will bolt on where the servo tray mounts to the frame.

You can say what you want , Just don't say it here!

Wow,guys all I can say is thanks for all the responses. I always knew century made great helis, but now I know where the century guys hang out.

Since my t-rex 500 is mid build, I think I will focus on completing that. This means I will be repairing not replacing my hawk... hey it should be cheap to do. Is there a metal gear set or an inexpensive way to upgrade the tail on the hawk in the meantime? I'm still running the wire drive... which seems fine to me... I have to open it up to find the failure, but I'm leaving for vacation in like 20 minutes.

By next month I'll probably upgrade to the .50, Century really makes impressive helis on the cheap.
