Blades, Night Flying and Painting > Radix 600 SB and acrobatic autos - Update 2

Hi

I have finally been able to get my hands on a set of SB's and I tried them out once (didn't had time for more flying) and the standart autos are doable without much hassles but alot less hang time than with my standart radix.

Now that I'm at the beginning of acrobatic autos (inverted with ending forward flip) and since I'm not that perfect at them, I wonder if doing an acrobatic auto with the SBs is too risky?

I've seen some top pilots fly this past weekend and I noticed that they did them without hassles on a 700N and stock radix but with a 600n and SB's they finished their flight with a "mini standart" auto. Maybe coincidence, maybe not.

I don't have enough stick time on the SB's so I can't judge them yet but it would be helpful to know if somebody else tried it and what experience he draw from it.

Thx
Tony

Why not try flipping it over at a higher altitude and if necessary..bail out.
If you're comfortable doing them then lower your flipping altitude till as desired

Thx for the tip.

I've put some flights in yesterday and I can't tell that much diference from them during autos. Yes the hang time is lower but perfectly managable. I think that I'll try an acrobatic one next time at the field.

Update 2

You can do acrobatics (aka autobratics ) with SB's on a windless day but you better get them perfect.

I did 3 autos without much hassles but noticed that with the lack of headspeed you either a) flip much higher and recover from the headspeed loss on the remaining way down, b) you flip as late as possible so that the remaining headspeed is just enough to imediately land.

I chose option b) until the 4th were I fliped way too late and no time to flare. Oh well... a landing gear and some frame savers are already ordered

Hi !

Im close to do my first inverted auto...just had a 4week pause in rcflying (had to go to work n fly real helis), so I´m working hard to get back in trim. I would be so glad if I only have to order parts from underside of heli after first try...calculating woth the risk of landing upside down, or in the middle of a bad flip or roll.

By the way, the first one´s will be with 'bail out' and re-engage engine, but after that...the first w/o bailing out....flip or roll ?
What would be the safest way to start with?

Well to be honest I never liked the abort approach because if your out of headspeed it will start to piro and God knows what comes next.

Anyway, with regular radix u shouldn't have a problem, just flip it very high and complete the rest of the way normally but backwards. Shouldn't pose a problem as you have time to flare and build up headspeed.

When I get my parts I'll follow that approach. No more low flips for me for a while...

I think rolling is easier on the headspeed than flipping but the disadvantage is that you can end doing a barrel roll and mix up your orientation.

Thanx for the answer.

Yes, rolls should be easy on HS, but a flip, well performed could build rpm like a flare ?

When I do an auto from high speed with a 90 degre nose up(like 1/4 of a loop) to make a 540 degree stallturn i can gain H.S if I manage to put the stick in the right position during the quarter loop.

Got it right about 50% of the tries before, but yesterday I put the throttle stick ratchet made for fixed wing in the Dx7 and grinded of all the nothces on the plastic wheel, and after that i made a groove at exactly middle stick(50% input in pitch menu).
So the stick is smooth without ratches and has a mark that I can feel when passing middle stick/ zero degree pitch. Haven tried it on the sceadu yet, only on my trex450SE, so I dont know how much it´ll help me.

[Edit] I´ve made a lotta 'bail outs', mostly when testing new stuff...I never have been in the position that the nose turned during bail out.
Only concern has been the one way bearing...but I got me some spare ones, so

There are massive discussions about flipping vs rolling here on RR. The flip will build up some headspeed at the beginning but kill any forwards speed so you can't use that later to trade between forward speed and headspeed. You can put the nose down to flare but if there isn't any forward speed left it won't help much. However, I'm pretty sure you'll do fine with the stock radix as they keep the headspeed very well.

I used to start the flip still with the stick in the positive zone and move it to zero when the bird was vertical but I might change this approach.
