I was charging my 12v field battery with the supplied charger and i noticed if I put my ear close to it, ..it was gurggling...is this normal/safe?

Its a 12v 7ah lead-acid battery, and the wall charger it came with has an output of 12v 500mah.

The sound starts about 30 seconds after I plug the wall charger in.

thanks!

That's pretty common with lead acid. If it’s not sealed you can open the caps and see it bubbling. Just remember it is sulfuric acid and will cause burns and damage.

I use a full size deep cycle battery to charge at the field and when I charge it with a car charger it does the same thing.

When the battery is discharged the acid is converted basically to water. When you charge the battery the chemical reaction is reversing this process and it has to out gas while charging. At low currents the bubbling/gurgling should be minimized.

That's as close to chemistry I like to get.

From my experience...everything should be normal.

I agree for the most part. The sulfuric acid is the electrolyte; it lets electrons flow through it whilst giving or taking them depending on charging versus discharging. The bubbling is hydrogen gas being given off from the sulfuric acid during the charge cycle. Very flammable. Most caps on batteries are vents as well but if clogged the acid could spray out.
Bottom line charge in well ventilated area away from spark and flame. If you must remove them wear a face shield at least.
