Hi, a friend of mine has a Blade CX2 with upgraded metal heads and a Bell Long Ranger fuselage. The heli will get off the ground but about 10 seconds into the flight, it seems the lower blade's motor looses power, resulting in an uncontrolled pirouette / descent back to the ground.

He thought it was a battery problem, but charging the pack makes no difference. It will also do it repeatedly, as in fly for a bit, and then pirouette back down. All the blades are in good shape. I tried spooling the blades up while holding the heli in my hand, and everything seems to turn normally, but the one motor looses power as if it's flying.

Does this mean the motor needs replacement? Or can it be a problem with the speed controller? Has anyone run into a similar issue?

Note: The fuselage does have a sizable hole in the bottom, so I don't think it's overheating. Besides, the heli used to fly normally with it.

Thanks for any suggestions about how to go about resolving this problem.

try reversing the plugs on the speed control from the motors and lisen if the same motor slows that its probly the motor if its now the other than its most likely speed controler i would guess....good luck

The speed controllers are somewhat problematic and "undurable". If I were to guess it would be the 4in1 that's toast. Plug them into different sockets like 05star said. Then you'll see if it's the motor. If it's not the motor (which I don't think it is) it's probably a solder joint that just loosens up when warm. I'm not familiar with your knowledge about boards and microchips so forgive me if this sounds bland:

You're solder joints heat up and cool down many many times on any type of circuit board that see's heat. The solder never gets to the point of being liquid (i hope for your sake) but still heat and stress fractures due to the constant vibration and crash impact. You can usually "reflow" these joints. Hey, what do you have to loose? The thing is toast anyways right? Grab a good solder station or go to a buddy's place that know's what he's doing and retouch all the pins going through the board. Use your judgment, most don't need more solder. At the very least liquefy the existing solder for each suspicious terminal and then let it cool and set again. Be patient, if you put too much heat into the thing it's toast beyond revival. Do one at a time and let them cool in between. (air compressor is handy) This has saved me an incalculable amount of money over the years for many "toy" electronics.

HEY i also had this problem and i realized that on my keeper , it had play inbetween the keeper and the lower blade gear. i just had to snug down that keeper w/ locktite because the gerar was jumping off the pinion. speed demomn is probably right though.
