well ive read about it on here, and it happened to me today,il give you some back ground on my drama.
i bought this vibe second hand ,20 flights old no crashes ,like new.it had a ys in it.it ran good for the first few flights ,then i read about head speed and gearing,it had the standard ratio, headspeed was 2100,so i changed the gear ratio to 8.4 for the ys ,but to get the pinion backlash right i ended up having to shim the engine .5 .so i do all that and the head speed is 1930 ,good.than for no reason it chewed the clutch liner out.
so that was it i swaped everything back and put a new os hyper into it,no shims required and everything seemed really good, even the annoying harmonuc noise it used to make at idle had gone.
ran the motor in ,was checking head speed at 2100 again, adjusted the throttle curve ,[its gone from looking like a v to a u.and then it all turned to ****.had the head a 1900 and this weired noise started ,so i just hovered trying to work out what was going on then boom, lucky i had the finger on the throttle hold ,so the heli is ok tail box sheard off at the boom.
now this is a new tail box i swapped over from my other new vibe ,so the only over speeding would be less than 2 mins maximun, and is only 6 flights old.
it also seems
maybe i have a vibration some where in the heli that may of contributed ,but at this stage im not sure.all i can say is some thing obviously isnt right for this to happen so quickly.
any thoughts would be appreciated.
ps ,at least the tail box is only 22 bucks.

Tail blades , make? did they get destroyed in the mishap? Glad you were able to set it down easy!
I found getting the bearings and the sleeve on the input to the tail box a royal pain in the a$$ had to heat em a little with soldering iron then press them out, and they were tight! My tail box failed due to NHP tail blades not fitting the grips properly and the bushing rounding out in the blade itself...I caught it before it failed all together but did round the bearing keepers and such....

I put my vibe 90 in the air last night ..I've been fighting a bad vibration for awhile and could'nt track it down..but I finally got it..I was about ready to give up...its over a year old and maybe 4 flights on it..lol . My problem was a motor issue (ys).

Let us know what you find! Good luck.
John

weekend yet?

yeah the ys just isnt a good match for the vibe imop, interesting you say tail blades,im not actually sure of the brand ,they are carbon, but when i picked up the tail box the grips were real warm, which i thought was strange.one blade let go the other is fine.there could be something there,im not sure.il keep looking.

Hi Opti!

The loose of the tail rotor box is a well known issue concerning the Vibe and also the former Vigor.

Two of my flying collegues and me personally suffered from the consequences.

Horizon released a bulletin sometimes last year addressing that problem.
You find it attached.

I own two Vibes 90 and after having down the procedure as advised I never had that issue anymore!

I hope that helps.
Good luck and have fun with your Vibes. They are great machines.

Michael

Bulletins

Through reports from some of our Team JR members in the field it has come to or attention that there have been a small percentage of Vibe helicopters that have experienced severe tail vibration and in a couple instances lost tail rotor blades. This is obviously a very serious condition that can result in a catastrophic crash.

Through extensive research we have traced the cause to an improperly secured bolt on the tail clamp (#JRP960133) thus allowing the tail rotor gear box to rotate on the tail boom in flight. In some cases the tail rotor blades strike the vertical fin resulting in the grips and or rotor hub being destroyed. In less severe instances a resonance (vibration) occurs in the tail rotor system/gearbox. This resonance is primarily occurring when the tail clamp (#JRP960133) is insufficiently tightened allowing the tail rotor gearbox to resonate in the tail boom resulting in extreme stresses being placed on the tail hub, blade grips and tail blades which in time will fail.

Important: The tail clamp (part #JRP960133) fastens the tail rotor gearbox to the tail boom and must be securely clamped in place to prevent gear box rotation and or tail resonance/ vibration. This requires that the 3mm x15mm socket head bolt (JRP980015) be securely tightened such that the clamp compresses the tail boom fixing the tail rotor gearbox in place. It’s necessary to use adequate force when tightening this 3x15mm screw so that the clamp compresses the tail boom firmly securing the tail rotor gearbox in place. Note that the tail clamp is also used to attach the rear portion of the vertical fin in place. It’s very important to fully tighten the 3x15mm socket head bolt that tightens the clamp and secures the tail rotor gearbox in place BEFORE the vertical fin is attached. If the vertical fin is installed first it’s possible that the screw attaching the fin to the clamp will prevent the 3x15mm clamp bolt from fully seating preventing the clamp from securely fastening the tail rotor gearbox in plac

yeah i know about that ,mine didnt come loose, half of it was still tight in the boom,it sheared off at that point,il take some photos, the same thing happened to another vibe in australia yesterday as well, there has to be a common problem, ive read about high head speed causing them to break off,but my vibe started to make a weired noise and then it broke.i just fully stripped the tail box,one tail blade was gone but the bush was still on the bolt the other blade which looks fine has flogged the bush in the blade and is ready to let go,so maybe my blades were the problem or maybe another vibration caused the blades to let go?

i was out flying my vigor last week when doing some autos i must have come in and bump the tail didn't think anything of it everything seemed fine went and started doing some flips and rolls when the tail case broke off flush with the boom.i don't know why jr doesnt make the case out of aluminum.tail blades and fin all good never touched anything lucky to hit the hold button and auto damage was light bent spindal ,landing gear and ft tank frame, and one broke blade grip didn't even bend the boom,i'll give it the once over with the repair.Tom

can u make it go faster

i havnt found my vibration issue yet ,but i am working on a adapter to fit a titanium stratus tail box, should be ready in 2 weeks.at least i wont have to worry about the tail falling off again.
im thinking of selling the adapter as a part for those who are interested,it will take either closed or open ma stratus tail boxes.

Has anyone thought about using Vibe 50 tail gear box into Vibe 90?
