based on the original post, I don't thing he was making a comparison, merely trying to make a choice. Gasser, Gasser, Gasser........If this helps..

If it doesn't fly sell it!

only a few things have ever stopped me from going electric.

1) initial costs (lipo's, chargers, balancers, ect)
2) short flight times
3) cost of additional lipo's
4) finding ways to charge your lipo's at the field without idling your car (if you have one) for long periods of time, and inventing new types of 12V power supplies.
5) waiting times for charging

Nitro machines:

1) Simple, proven, and can be very reliable (if you fly YS)
2) fast to refuel
3) longer flight times
4) lower initial costs
5) they sound neat
6) IC is just plain old cool
7) leaves a nice smoke trail, great for making nice round loops, and assisting in moves
8) and best of all the helicopter is self lubricating

im not saying i will never get an electric, but right now the 450 i have is as far i will go until lipo technology improves to allow longer flight times.

also...i have been flying for over 5 years now, and i wrote off the 450 last week due to the motor cutting out for an unknown reason. its the first helicopter i have seriously damaged due to motor failure...another one down for electrics!

The (If you fly YS) thing sticks in my mind, I have always wondered if i should have purchased the YS instead of the OS!! Time will tell I guess....

well...i like YS enough that i waited this long to get a 50 because i was waiting for YS to come out with their own 50 engine, and i was even willing to pay twice as much for it verses a hyper.

you really cant beat its smooth powerful and consistent performance.

i pumped about 18 gallons through my YS90 last summer, it ran the same on every gallon. i rebuilt it over winter (new bearings and piston ring). i ran it for the first time today since october. she fired right up, and by the second flight it was already starting to smooth out and show what it can do. i didn't even touch the needles, they are the same as they were last october.

I seen and heard a lot of good things about the YS, So far my Os 50 Hyper has been die hard but the Ys has always haunted me in the back of my mind. Is that engine built by Yamaha?

If it doesn't fly sell it!

no, i dont believe so. i heard its just a small shop that builds RC engines. they do super high quality engines, and at a relatively slow rate. they dont pump them out as fast as OS, hense the bad history of getting parts. but sofar i have never had trouble.

I like my nitros to.I better, i have 12 of them.the smell the noise , the smoke, the run times.but unfortanatley I'm a power hungry feind and the 50's just can't cut it for me so i looked into 90's and was very discouraged by the price ,crash cost and operateing cost due to there feroucious fuel appitites.I like to fly alot.in the last 2 weeks i have 120 flights in and the weather hasn't been that good.with a 90 heli that would be 80 flights to be fair to equal flight time.and at 22 oz per flight, that would be 14 gallons of fuel at 30 to 40 dollars a gallon, that would have been $420.00 to $560.00 of fuel for 2 weeks of flying.now if you calclate a battery for one of my 600 size eletrics(witch by the way will out perform a 90 size heli hands down)costs about $350 to $450 depending on size. and they are good for atleast 200 charges and some neww ones are twice that.and a123's are good for 1000 charges. any ways at an average of $400 for a battery and figureing the minumum 200 charges.those same 120 flights used up 60% of the batteries life for a cost of $240 witch is less then half of flying a 90 size heli for those same number of flights with that being said 100 flights and the batteries are free if compared to the cost of nitro.Plus mainenence is about a quarter of a nitro due to much less vibes.
and if you fly a swift 16 the batteries are only 200 to 300 so flying gets even cheaper.
Don't get me wrong i love my nitros but if you whant performance for 50 cost. eletrics is the only way it will happen.I save my nitros for the week ends when i have time to fiddle with the never ending maintence issues and tuneing issues .I find thst since i've been flying eletrics, my flying time has at least doubled but my maintence time is a lot less then half.
The thing that kept me from eletrics was the upfront cost of the batteries and worry of wrecking battries.but after it was erxplained to me this way, i saw the light.and for crashing . i havn't wrecked a battery in a crash yet, and beleive me i used to crash alot just ask my flying buddy.
So i think it comes down to how much flying do you whant to do and what kind of prformance are you looking for.If you're somebody that only flys a little the nitro has cheaper stert up cost. But if you whant cheap, hiperfomance flying then eletric is where it's at.
Just my $.02 worth.

There was a thread a while back where comparisons were made between nitro and electric and $/per flight, and I believe at the end it worked out to about the same (give or take a little).

NO SOUP FOR YOU!!

batteries have come down in price recently .and they are good for more charges.
plus are you comparing to 90's or 50's.campared to 50's the cost is closer. but the eletrics out performe 90's so thats what i compare to.
Another aspect is maintenece on eleticrs is alot cheaper.stuff just doesn't seam to wear out.

maybe in terms of power to weight, but i will fly my 90 any day before a 50 electric. as it is i cant outfly my freestyle, so why would i need a higher power to weight ratio? so i can bang the sticks around like a "pro" ?

true very true.
I was flying 50's and wanted more.
the price and repair cost of the 90's is what turned me off.
You're right . very few of us can use all the power that a 600e has.
But it's still cool haveing it
And many times now, haveing that extra power for when i need it has saved me from crashing.
Just 3 weeks ago i crashed one of my nitros because i screwed up and bogged the head to low to the ground.
My first thought was had i been flying one of my eletrics i could have saved it and have saved simular situations with them befor.
So you might say that even though i can't fly it to it's potental, they help me to make up for my mistakes.
And i still make quite a few of them

hmm.....nice swift. i like what you did to it.

did you have to mod anything to put the battery on the nose and swap the landing gear?

i think the swift just looks weird with the gear the way it is, i know it works fine, but its the looks.

yours looks bad @$$, the way a century heli should.

No mods needed for the battery. For the struts I just had to re drill to make fit.
