Thunder Tiger Raptors 30-90 - Imperio > RAPTOR 50 ARE RAPTOR CLUTCHES UP TO DEALING WITH THE POWER OF NEW 50 SIZE ENGINES AND RX RUNNING ON

Hi all. Been flying today and tried out some new Futaba BLS351 servos on cyclics to replace JR811's and it's a new heli! Running 3300Nimh rx battery with TT53 redline and #523 Hatori exhaust. My gripe with raptors (...and I'm flying the flag for these helis) is the robustness of the clutch. I fly 3D - tic tocs etc so I do put the ol' dear under a bit of stress. I've lost count the number of times I've had to replace clutch shoes and bells because part of the shoe breaks off - this is with the so called 'heavy duty' Quick UK clutch shoe. I've had the pinion gear worn in half by the starter shaft bearing problem and I'm coming to the conclusion after today - ARE RAPTOR CLUTCHES UP TO DEALING WITH THE POWER OF NEW 50 SIZE ENGINES AND RX RUNNING ON LIPO'S. I fly two raptor 50's V2 and titan. How long have your clutches lasted when you put the heli through its paces. I think the liner must wear down too far and then the shoe over extends itself and snaps off.

I have been saying that Raptor's can keep up with the best of them but I'm thinking the design of these things are not up to do aggressive 3D which is what I'm into. Anyone out there who can help solve this annoying problem

I havent messed with the clutch in my Titan since I put it together and it gets flown near about every weekend. It was one out of the first batch of Titans from HP

The clutch is sufficently sized. Touch your clutch bell after a flight, if its hot, the clutch is slipping. My original TT clutch lasted 300+ flights of 3d before a boomstrike left it permanently sprung. You need to set the gap of the clutch liner properly to prevent it from wearing prematurely and clutch shoe from breaking.

The old v1 clutch was the problematic one, had to change mine every 100 or so flights. The v2 one is ok.

You don't have to change the bell each time you change the clutch, just change the liner inside.

My Titan is a couple of years old with tons of flights and I've never had to do anything to the clutch. Perhaps your idle is set a little high thus burning through liners more frequently. Once the shoe/liner gap gets too big, the shoe springs and breaks.

Good point. never thought of that. I do have my idle running rich and so I have to keep the revs up to keep it going. Not too much but I guess it eventually wears down. They do last a season or so. I don't know whether they break because of the stress put on the drive train.

If you are just putting in a new clutch, but the liner is already worn down, then the new clutch will spring out to the larger diameter. Once the new clutch is sprung this way, it will need replacing.

Decided to get the robbe clutch bell and epoxy the liner in using the tape around the shoe method to get the correct gap. So far it has worked but then the OS packed up (bearings) so i haven't really tested it to destruction. I will be trying a new YS50 in the titan tomorrow to see how that goes.

got this from Midlland Helicopters only because it is easier to get the show out of the bell after the epoxy has set beacuse of the holes in it!

As far as the heavy duty clutch shoe goes I have used the Quick UK one and I don't think that lasted any longer than the stock raptor ones. Once the liner wears the shoe is going to spring out past its breaking point and then its knackered whatever make it is.

The clutch bell in the picture is a down grade. The structure has been weakened by the lightening slots and eventually it will develope cracks between the holes. The first indication will be grey paste. It will appear on one or two 'spokes' first and you'll have lots of warning before it fails completely if you inspect your helicopter closely on a regular basis. That gold thing has more flex through being weaker and overtime the metal will fatigue, especially if running hard and high rpm with heavy use. This is why you'll see solid bells used by OE manufacturers. Revolution makes a similar unit.

Just wondering what problems you guys are having with the stock V.2 clutch system?

Thanks for the info. I'm surprised you say that since it's made by robbe but we'll have to wait and see! Haven't had enough flight time with it yet to see how it realyy stands up but I'll definitely post the results on here one way or the other.

Colin - here are the main problems I have had: starter shaft wearing through the pinion gear until it shears in two - I think this is due to the bearing failing that holds the clutch bell - see here

http://www.runryder.com/helicopter/t383127p1/

Next is where the shoe just breaks because of over extending itself - must be worn liner but most of the liners I've had look like they have plenty of meat left on them.

Anyway trying out the YS50 today in the titan - always in search of that perfect combination!

i have to say that i have changed from the original ones to these Robbe ones.

I have had ( in both my raptors - 50 ,and titan ) broken clutch bells.

The first one broke like a bean can...

and the second like this :

I have been using the gold robbe one and did not noticed any metal fatigue. It's working great.

Even after a boomstrike during chaos where i had the shaft broken it is still running

.

I have also a case where the clutch broke in my raptor 50 V2.

I replaced it with the Quick Uk clutch which i believe it's a great clutch...expensive...but good

.

Keep it up...literally

Hello all again

Been flying the titan with the YS trying to get it set up. I have to say the engine is smooth but I think it's down on a bit of power compared to the OS. I'm having to be a lot more sensitive with the collective when throwing it around because it does tend to bog. Running +-10 so it shouldn't stall. I'm going to lighten the heli to help - taking off the metal blade grips and washout assembly. Don't know if this will make much difference. The robbe clutch and TT clutch shoe are holding up nicely at the moment.

I don't think the gold clutch bell is made by Robbe, it is just packed by Robbe UK.

Here's mine. The clutch has expanded and the liner worn out including some metal from the bell.

So many years wasted on plankers...!!!!
