The little guy has to have surgery today, his bowel did not connect to his rectum, so they sent him to the University of Kentucky childrens hospital. Getting ready to head that way as soon as my wife is released, only 2 hours drive from here so it won't be too bad. I just dread it for him knowing what he has to go through.

Thanks for the kind words.

Congratulations first!!!

I hope everything goes ok during/after the surgery. Will this problem have any kind of affect on his quality of life?

he will require 3 surgeries

1. 1:00pm today...colostomy to allow bowel movement
2. 5-6 months later have the surgery to connect the bowel to the anus (the colostomy will remain in place until the bowels heal
3. 6 weeks to 3 months later the colostomy will be removed and full bowel activity should be normal.

the entire process should be completed by 9-12 months of age, he should be completely normal after that so it won't affect his lifestyle. He wont have memories of any of it and the only sign that will remain is the scar on the belly.

It has been heartwrenching to deal with it, I have been talking to specialists and surgeons all day, but he will be fine and I will be teaching him to fly in a few years. ""look out Chi""

I had a colostomy at a few weeks old, or days old, or whatever it was... I'd have to ask my parents.

This was back in '77... I was also 4 weeks premature.

Doctor said my chances of living were very slim and if I did live I'd be weak with issues the rest of my life.

I'd like to find that doctor today if he's still alive, cause I'm doing fine. 5'8", 180# and pretty damn muscular if I do say so myself

I have no doubt that your son will turn out fine... I'd assume that medical practices are a LOT better than they were 30 years ago!

Anyways, keep us updated and good luck... I'm interested to hear how things turn out.

Well, the little guy made it through the first surgery just fine, the only concern was that there might not be all of the intestine there, but as it turns out, he has all that is supposed to be there, it just didnt make the attatchment.

The surgeons and doctors say he will be just fine and he has made it through the toughest part, the anasthesia....

It's been a LONG couple of days... we need a good nights sleep.

Thank goodness the hospital has free wireless internet, It would be so much more borring otherwise.

Update on Chandler (Chan)

2 days since his first surgery and they have removed the respirator and oxygen, he is eating and keeping food down just fine, the colostomy is working perfectly and his bowels are all there so it will be a simple fix in a later surgery.
They are supposed to be removing his IV lines today since he no longer needs to be given nourishment intraveinously. The doctor says if he continues to do this well we may get to bring him home as early as wednesday.
