I didn't want to hijack anyone's post, so decided to start a new thread.
Take the recent discussion off of Benny's thread and move it here, please.

There is quite a bit of controversy with the very young pilots.
The talk has for the most part quieted down since Justin Chi has pretty much proven himself as a pilot, but a new young pilot in Korea is creating a ruckus again.
Many people don't think they shouldn't be flying at all, or they should only fly when supervised with a buddy box.

The naysayers share a few common concerns.
Mostly that they are immature, can't take responsibility for their actions, and basically lack the ability to reason.

The naysayers seem to share the idea of imposing a rule, stating that requires the pilot to reach a minimum age before soloing on the sticks.
Reminds me of a theme park where you see the signs that say, "You must be this tall to enjoy this ride."

If you don't like it that the young pilots are flying, then leave.
It doesn't matter who's on the sticks. It could be ANYBODY out there on the sticks, whatever field you happen to be at. It could at a major event or competition, or at your local field on a Sunday morning.
Something could go wrong and a pilot loses control.

But you know what?
If you get hit by an airplane or a helicopter, it was your own damn fault. No, not because you didn't get out of the way fast enough, of course not! It's because you where there, at the field!

You're responsible for yourself. If you're afraid of getting hit by an RC aircraft, don't go to the field. If you're afraid of getting hit by a drunk driver, stay off the road. If you're afraid of being in a plane crash, take the bus! If you're afraid of getting food poisoning, stay away from undercooked meat. Its a simple concept.

It's always YOUR FAULT because by doing ANYTHING in your life, you're assuming a risk, and therefore accept responsibility for yourself.

So check this out. Rather than setting some stupid rule that says you gotta be so old to fly, how about something that says you have to be so old to be at the field (without a parent or guardian).
That makes perfect sense to me.
Cuz like I said, if YOU get hit by a model, it's YOUR fault.

Im not Mr. Lebowski, YOU'RE Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dood! So thats what you'll call me

well said.
I would like to add that people forget what year it is. we are living in the video game age. half of the kids nowadays can pick up the concept of a heli in a week and be out there outflying everyone in a few months..
I wonder if some of this animosity is caused by plain old jealousy.

Couldn't have said it better myself. That is EXACTLY the way it SHOULD be.

If you don't want to get hit by a foul ball, then don't go to the ball game!

I agree with the whole jealousy bit. I am a young flyer (16) and have in turn only been flying for a year on my own. I grew up with my thumbs on the sticks of a Playstation controller. I only incorporated the movements to the Tx. And now I am matched with most of the guys at our field 3D wise. But it is mostly the plankers at the field that give us the hardest time. I don't know what it is about the heli they just don't like. It's like they have never seen their take-offs from the back side of the runway. It is a little scary with a plane almost over your head.

Im not speeding. I just look fast.

First well said Dood, I couldnt agree more that most people take zero responsibility for their own actions and for some reason have been brought up to always believe it is always someone elses fault.

Apple and oranges. You wouldnt be afforded the oportunity to pack your **** and leave the road until it was too late. BTW I have a friend who's son has been driving since a very early age, he can outdrive most and back a trailer far better than most. So once again dont sell them short. The one part you forgot is he proved himself and is a compentent pilot. Hell I dont condone half of the people that are driving today unfortunately they are an adult and someone said it was ok wether they can drive or not..

DOnt mix apples and oranges.. It tastes like ****.

Now how are you going to compare driving a car to flying a model aircraft?

He can't even see over the steering wheel, but thats besides the point.
Say they DID allow kids to drive cars, provided they could pass a written test and a road test.
My point is, if you don't like it, you don't have to drive on the same road as he, or you don't have to drive at all.

I've shared the road with some old people, who I know shouldn't have been on the road. Can't be much different, as I've met some senior citizens who have the mentality of a kindergardener. Now how is that much different? It's not.
When I'm driving near an old person who is on his way to church or something, I either speed up or slow down. I don't drive anywhere near them.

But you know what? Both parties have (or should) have insurance, right?

YOU take responsibility for yourself. Thats my point.

Why are people so stuck on the age factor? If a person is proficient at a job, or task, why does age matter?

My mother is 65. She just had her license to drive revoked because she can't pass the tests.

Age doesn't matter. Skill and proficiency are what's important.

so who determines who is at fault (takes the responsibility)
the under age kid flying at the field?
the drunk driver?
the old lady who spills hot coffee on herself and sues mcdonalds?
I don't think its a point of responsibilty anymore I think its just turned into lack of respect.
if the kid has proven himself then its our obligation to encourage him and see what he can make of himself.

BTW almost everything we achieve in life is due to some sort of acceptance. We get our DL, our diploma, our carry permit, job advancement... All from proving proficiency or ability and skills within a particular topic or set of topics. Justin can fly the paint off of a heli, I have seen some instances when people fly its "all eyes up" Noone wishes a crash on someone but a lot of people want to know where its going at that time.

What is so different. I have seen way to many old timers come plowing through the pits or into cars... I guess the question I have for the naysayers is

What would you do? in the scenarios you all bring up, what would you do? YOu dont know because it didnt happen yet? YOu can only assume you will do better than a 4 year old but it is not proven and actually by the stats they have us older guys beat.. faster reflexes, they wont be nervous because they are worried about the wallet.. etc.. I have seen guys come back from the field shaking after a mostly forward flight routine.. Why? because there was a crowd or they had a close call.. Kids just keep un truckin, they are not attached to the wallet.

We ALL take responsibility.

The drunk driver one might have been a bad example
but ya know, there are always going to be stupid, irresponsible people in this world. It would be nice to get rid of all stupid people once and for all, but thats pretty much an impossibility. you know this.

Every night, there are going to be drunk drivers on the road. It sucks, but drunk drivers are real, and you can't always stop them.

So what can you do about it?
Stay off the road at bar time.
Stay of the road on labor day, 4th of July, memorial day, new years, etc...

I don't drink myself (used to, but not anymore) But when I'm on the road between 1 and 2 in the morning, and I see headlights pointed at me in the oncoming lane, it scares the hell out of me. I don't know if that person has been drinking or not.

BUT, I don't have to be there.
For starters, I have no business being on the road at 2 in the morning.
I could have stayed home, or if I was traveling, I could have turned off the highway and got in a hotel.
If I got hit, it's my own fault for being on the road in the first place. I'm responsible because I accepted the risk, and chose to share the road with drunks.

The drunk driver will pay the consequences if he gets caught or hurts or kills somebody, but I'm going to pay the consequences as well, especially if I get hurt.
Its just a different way of "paying" for it.

I agree with you but it brings up another sad point in todays society.
people like us have to pay extra attention throughout our lives to take up the slack for the people that don't.
it just isn't right.
