Century Hawk - Falcon - Raven - Predator > Raven 50 servo/receiver problems

I had a bit of an "incident" with my Raven last week. I was having a problem with the gyro, but it turned out to be the radio prgramming. I got that sorted out, but about 5 minutes later, the tail acted like the c/f linkage was getting hung up. It has never done that before. Anyhow, the tail got sluggish, then the heli turned 90 deg. and I set it down. Before I could get it shut completely down, it rolled over and the blades hit (quick lesson on dynamic rollover). It was still running, so I shut the engine down. I noticed that the servos were reacting to some input I wasn't giving it. I took the heli back to the truck, and turned the radio back on, then the heli. The servos again jumped around. I took it home and tried it again thinking that it was something at the field. Same story, the swervos went nuts. I switched to a different heli to make sure it wasn't the radio. It wasn't. After switching back to the Raven, I started unplugging the servos one at a time, and then turning the receiver on. The servos again jumped. But it is only the ccpm servos. The tail and throttle are fine now. All this with the engine shut down, so I don't believe it is a bearing causing interferance. I noticed that I stripped all the gears in the ccpm servos when it hit. When I removed the metal arm from the servos, the output just spins 360 degrees when I turn on the receiver. I intend to replace the JR DS 811s with Futaba 9252s. I am also going to replace the receiver. I have the Futaba 168DP (I know 2.4 is next on the list). It was new when I got the heli. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. I obviously have NO idea what I am doing here! Thanks in advance.

Wiggle the battery cable and all associated cables like the switch exc while it is on and see if it has any change. Sounds kind of like some intermittent batter connection.

If it doesn't fly sell it!

Also check the rx antenna for any cuts or of it touching the frame area. That can cause intermitent interference.

Thanks guys. I'll check both of those things when I get home. Hopefully it is a battery issue rather than a receiver problem.

I took the receiver out and checked the antenae. There are no cuts or marks on it. So I took that receiver and put it in one of my planes. It worked fine. Then I took the receiver from the plane and put it in the heli. Again, all three cyclic servos just spun in circles. So, I put the original heli receiver back in it. Then I plugged in one servo at a time. I went, throttle, gyro, gain. Then I plugged in one cyclic at a time. They all turned circles. Then I went in reverse order, unplugging one servo at a time. Same story. The other servos work fine. So, I tried plugging the cyclics into other ports on the reciever. Same thing. They all just turn. I think I am safe to say that my receiver is good, but the three cyclic servos are shot. Is there any reason why just those three would act up? Well, I know there are a thousand reasons why, but is there a common reason? I intended to replace them anyhow, but, they didn't need to wreck my heli to get my attention! I priced out 3 S9252, a Gy401 and a 9254, a crash kit, a new tail pitch control set, and a new main gear. At www.heliworld.com it came out to $487 with a couple coupons. My wife was shocked and sickened by the quote. HAHA, she has no idea how deep I am into these. By the way, is it wrong to come after 2 weeks on the road and head to the heli room instead of going to bed with her? She gets mad when I reffer to the heli room as "our room" implying that I am married to the helis and planes and not her. Hahaha.

I, too, would say your servos are shot. Also be sure to recheck all your wiring from each of the servos connecting to the rx. Just yesterday, a fellow flyer was getting major glitching on his heli and after doing a look through, we discovered a frayed wire, touching one of the engine bolts.

Ray, why would it be just the cyclic servos though? I don't get it. Anyhow, I am going to replace all the electronics except for the throttle servo. I'll recheck everything that is going to stay on the heli. It may have to sit for a month or two. I haven't got enough time to fly, never mind fixing it.

that depends if you want to stay married

check these out

I also recommend going 2.4 ghz skip the BS you get from FM
1 less thing to worry about after all is it worth scrapping your heli from a frigging FM glitch.

Yeah, 2.4 is on the list. I am running PCM on that heli. It was never an issue up in Spokane, must be because we were so far out of town, in the fields. I'll check that site out. Thanks.

lest think back a minute here first... you said that you stripped the gears in all 3 cyclic servos from the crash right? and the crash was due to the heli doing a quick 90 degree turn on ya right? so lets say the crash was due to the tail servo acting sluggish...

did you replace the gears in the 3 cyclic servos? have you taken them apart to see if the slot that tells the servo to center is bent, broken or any damage?

i too would assume the servos are shot at that point, i had the ds-821's and got the 9252's, but i was having a leveling issue, so i replaced the 9525's with the hitec hs-5958mg and programmed the servos directly, now i have no issues and running a combined torque amount of 522oz/in, needless to say, it handles very well, lol...

No, I haven't replaced the gears in the servos. Yes, I took them apart and they are stripped. I just learned from Speedbmp that not having the output shaft will make the servo spin around. Yeah, I want those servos and gyro out. I am going to replace them over the next couple of months. Thanks for your help. Everyone has been very helpful with their insights. I had never seen a servo act like that before and it had me scratching my head for quite a while.
