hey guys, pretty new to the scene and all. but i got a new dx7 from a lhs and i seem to be having some issues with the battery life. when i charge it over night (12 hr) or so i will check the voltage read out. it will show some where in the 11V range. i will put the Tx in its carrying case and eat and get ready to go fly and by the time i get to where im going to fly my voltage would have dropped into the low 9V even 7V some times. this is with the Tx OFF. this doesn't seem normal to me. it makes me want to try the LIPO route and get a longer hold on my charge, but it is new and dropping all that $$$ just for lipo Tx battery and charger seems a bit off. i was suggested to contact horizon hobbies about my issue. any input would be greatly appreciated. my spektrum wall charger has a 11.6V out put 110ma. please help.

contact Horrizon. It may just be the battery. But it could be the voltage reg, or even something worse.

Let Horrizon fix it under warrenty.

The older I get, the shorter my attention....... Oh look. A shiny penny..

Look at the charger that you are using and tell us what
the output MA is. I think you may not be charging this long enough.
This would give you a elevated reading off the charger then it would drop quickly.

You should try charging this for about 24 hours if it is a new radio.
even a little longer would be fine.

If you have used it for a while then 12 hours should be ok.
15 hours would be about perfect.

Same Problem

I've had the same radio for a couple monthes now, and had the same issue with the battery. I moved my JR8103 battery to the DX7 with a full charge and the display on the DX7 still didn't read a full charge. I would think there is a calibration formula in the program that sets the reading on the display. I may have to send my radio in to have it checked and recalibrated to read properly.

THE reason it never reads full voltage is because it is originally designed to have 8 dry cells in the battery case thus giving 12v as the full calibrated voltage. your nimh only has an average voltage of 9.6v and therefore the display shows less than full charge

Good luck

when i check my voltage reading i use the Tx display as well as a separate meter on the battery its self. still same thing. horizon emailed me back saying that i had a bad cell in my battery and i should send it in with my receipt to get what ever fixed. only problem is im not sure what i did with that receipt. i think i threw it out b/c i didnt wanna see the $$$ i just spent. which may cost me a little more in the long run. which keeps bringing me back to the LIPO Tx batteries. it seems so nice to have a charge that will last and is dependable. sure it may catch fire if not taken care of. but from looking around the only people saying there are issues is SPEKTRUM not the users. so we shall see. thanks again.

It sounds very much like you have a duff cell or a bad battery then. Try using another battery, and if you are going for a change then Spektrum do a high capacity pack for use in their radio's. I would be very carefull about using a 3 cell lipo in my TX if the manufacturer says that they have repaired faults due to the user fitting a battery not in keeping with the design of the radio. It may work, but if the regulator in the radio fails because you are working outside its parameters then there is a chance you could crash your model, you have to then hope that it doesn't injure anyone as I believe you would the have a problem convincing the court your were not negligible in some way.
But this hobby is all about experimenting and finding out new things so if your happy then give the lipo a try, let us know how you get on.

Good luck

How long did you charge the battery the very first time out of the box? Even at 110mah you should have charged it 24 hours to help form the the pack. At this point I would charge it 24 hours and then recheck. The pack should feel a little warm when fully charged. My DX7 never shows full scale on the meter but after a 15 hour charge slightly over 11 volts. Mine will remain above 10 volts for at least 3 flying sessions. If your battery will not do so it is due for a warranty replacement.
Some use a Lipo but I prefer not to do so. Part of normal maintenance is checking the vehicle and charging the batteries...
