Who's using the CY Solid G Gyro on their Stratus , how do you like it and do you keep the G view mounted on the heli ?

I believe you don't have to keep the g-view attached all the time, only when your programming the gyro on the bench.

Has anyone flown the solid g on a stratus without using the g-view?

Solid G

Just get one...they work Incredibly well...no matter what heli you run them on..

I run a solid G on my Roxxter 55 and it kicks A$$...

I just got one for my ION X also...it's one of the best running gyros I have ever tried...and I have tried most all of them...

If I fly it without using the g-view will the piro stops/reversals be soft enough to not strip my crown gear? I may just try it and report back

Gview

The gview is simply for programming the Solid G gyro...no need to do it manually if you have the Gview...

also...with the Gview you can pick pre tuned models from the menu and the settings are VERY close to what you'll need...there is a Stratus in the menu..as for mounting the sensor...I mounted mine on that upper front shelf...just like you would for a gy611

there is an adjustment for how hard you want your piro stops to be also...

I like to crazy fast piro rates but the settings listed for the solid g seem a little conflicting to me , that being , what is the coast speed for if you have a rate setting for piro stop ? How radical of a piro rate do you guys run on the stratus without the fear of blowing the tails gears to sh!t ?

G view

Hey man...I just sold a Brand new G View to Krashtagain yesterday...lol

By the way Krashtagain..it just went in the mail ..

I would DEFINITELY recommend a g view...it's the ONLY way to go as far as programming the solid G gyros..especially if you have more than 1 Solid G like I do...you can also use the G view on the ATG gov..

As for Piro rates ...In General I tend to be a bit more gentle on the piro rates forthe Min Airs because the crown gears do blow rather easily....and they are $$$ to fix..

Hey Jag72 just want to pick up on a point you made

If thats from your own experience then I think you got an issue about setting crown gear/pick up pinion backlash, because one thing those gears just don't do, is blow in flight, if they are set right. If they blow in flight then they ain't set right...........

During initial gyro setups in the past I've had gains set so high the tail bounces back and forth by itself as hard as you can imagine in fast forward flight and I have yet to blow a gear like that yet.

bparro on my CSM 720s, with their very highly adjustable stop tracking gain my machines stop solid from fast piros no issues. If you need help setting your crown mesh just drop me a PM, but don't be afraid to set for hard stops.

Tail Setup..

I personally have NEVER had a crown gear blow out on me in flight...and I have done some very hard piros...what I was trying to say is that I am just a bit more cautious because of all I have heard from others stripping gears...but I have either been very lucky or I actually know how to set my lash...because like I said I have never had one actually blow on me...

just ordered a g-view. My mesh is set correctly but I think any gyro set incorrectly can break gears.

Well thats an easy one to answer, it will be because you do know how to set the gears that they haven't blown on you, it isn't just luck.

These things have been accurately designed and precision engineered that if they are set right they won't blow, so if they blow they aren't set right.

Good to hear you have never had any issues Jag, it's a testament to your building, no such thing as luck!

bparro, if the gyro is set very incorrectly then fair enough I agree, but you would need to be trying to break it intentionally, as these gears can and will take serious punishment. The point I was making was that there is no issue and never has been any issue or suggestion that the gears "blow rather easily" as was indicated before, so in the normal running and correct build, with very very hard stops, high gain levels and direction changes there won't be any issues, at all, and as Jag said himself, it has "NEVER" happened to him.

In the R&D history of the MA tail drive system has always found any weak link in the system to be in an area OTHER then the crown gear. Guy broke TT's and blew up tail cases. Those issues are since solved. The crown gears always held up. The two primary causes of crown gear failure in flight are mispositioning of the bevel gear on the crown gear coupled with the presence of ANY backlash prior ro maingear break-in. The optimum gear mesh is checked and confirmed to be smooth and effectively backlash free once the gear has been flown a few flight. The two criterion CAN exist simultaneously.

the crown gears used to strip on old 60 x-cell before they made a barring block on the end of the pinion to hold it in place. this started after heading hold gyros came out. but was fixed quite a few years ago...
