e-Minicopter Joker > MJ1 buzzing sound from tail

When flying, my MJ1 (with cranked tail) would intermittently emmit a buzzing/clicking sound from the tail area. This seems to occur during the following phases:

1) When I give large rudder input
2) During spool down

For the life of me, I just can't seem to locate the problem. I cannot replicate that sound when I hand spin the head (thus the tail gear). There's good tension on teh belts, and everything seems to spin smoothly.

It flies great, but I can't help but wonder if this is a sign that something is about to fail.

Are you running CF tail blades? When was the last time you changed the bearings in the tail?

I had the same exact problem with my cranked tail setup it sounds like you are having. I swapped out to plastic blades, that helped, but turned out my bearings were wearing down.

Yes, I'm using CF tail blades. Are plastic blades better? I haven't changed the bearing because I thought if they were faulty, I should be able to replicate that sound by hand spinning the gears.

You are not putting any load on the bearings spinning by hand. If you get this noise during a tail rotor input, take the grips off and be sure the thrust bearing washers are installed correctly, meaning the large hole on first, then balls facing that washer, then the small hole washer with the cage facing it.

Hey Joe

Not that mine is making any noises but I can't remember how I installed mine. I think I'll take it apart and check. It won't hurt.

Thanks for the tip. I guess I'm getting really cautious with my MJ2 these days with all the things going wrong.

Thanks Joe, I'll check the thrust bearings.
