I was hovering inverted with my trex 450 mid battery, and it just kind of flipped out of controll, fell about 35/ 40 ft. to its death . one of my friends found the faulty pitch controll link that had come off during flight. it hit so hard that it didnt even sratch the wooden blades , but it snapped the feathering shaft in half at the middle!

I had the same thing happen to me. One of the link was too loose, just form use over time. When it let go, the heli decided to land itself, with full negative pitch on one blade. I was closer to the ground so it wasn't terrible but it made me realize that things can go wrong at any time and to never fly around people for that reason.

The "Piledriver"

I was flying my 450 SE, (4cell Kong, hacker a206xl, a real Missle) today, and kind of lost orientation in a tumble... took one last look at about 12 feet up, and thought the bird was inverted.. I added full negative pitch to climb out, but the problem was, the heli was right side up. I perfected the "PileDriver" manouver... only a couple of usable parts left!!! Carbon Frames shattered, etc etc etc.... Wish I had a camera, and a broom and dustpan!!!

Cheers,

Figured I'd add to the carnage. Inverted hover about 60ft up and lost the tail push pull linkage. Uncontrollable piro all the way to the ground. Just barely saved it enough to wreck feathering shaft and flybar only!

I wish I could see the battery fall to the ground. Could you imagine the OH S#!? look on a guys face!? I'm glad it wasn't me but I'm still sorry to hear about that. Did you crash or just auto in safely? I'd imagine autoing would be hard to do with no battery weight.

Yah, real hard.

I expect "auto-ing in" would be real hard if that battery also powered the radio receiver...More of a freefall I expect.

Yeah I would imagine. OOPS. I had a couple wobbly pops when I wrote that one. My mistake.

Some electric helis have a BEC I think it's called (battery eliminator circuitry? ) that allows you to run receiver off the main battery, though I expect a lot of people would still have the radio-only battery, so auto-ing would still be possible only if your receiver had it's own power source. Just think though, if the battery ran the radio, there would be total silence, then... a sickening wait.. CRASH.

Creepy, I had a small shudder just thinking about that silent wait.
