Crashed? Discussion and Photos > A little cable tie saves the heli

While I am flying my Evo90, the rubber band attaching the receiver battery to the frame decides to give way. The battery falls off and I am very lucky that the little cable tie (see the picture) saves it. The battery is hanging underneath my Ev090 in the middle of the sky. It is absolutely a scary situation, and I have to land it right a way. Without the cable tie, the battery would really fall off, and the Evo90 would either suffer a fatal crash or the worst fly away. I do not really want to think about the consequence.

So, this little fix up is something you may consider.

I would have crapped my pants had that happened to me. I dont have a charging harness those so that option isnt really availible to me.

Get a life? How the hell do you fly a life?

I always heat shrinked those connections

then they can't come apart. Looks smooth too.

I cable tie all of my servo and battery connections. A cable tie through the wires and around my reciever, battery to regulator connection, tail servo to step down and on the connections to my 611.

Actually had a friend this weekend have his heli come apart on him when his battery connection came loose during spool up. Watched as it started to lift then rolled off to the left with a sickening smack as it hit the ground and blew itself up.

No matter what method you choose to use, always make sure your connections are secured so they cannot be disconnected unless you take them apart.

Glad your heli got saved, always nice to know that little added security we do helps.

I fly.....because I can.

Might sound like a good idea, but it isnt that good.

You see the strain on those wires that that tie-wrap is putting on them?
Yeah, thats not good.
You're going to cut a wire, break a wire, cut the jacket , something.

A better solution would be dental floss or fishing line.
The heat shrink idea sounds ok too.

I am glad it saved your heli but the zip ties put tooo much stress on the wires use shrink wrap on them.

i use dental floss, it doesn't stress the wire as much as a zip tie.

I use dental floss too. Make sure it's waxed so it's easier to tie a tight knot.

Cable ties work for a while, but as already noted, is putting strain on the wires and also, over time, zip ties usually become brittle and can snap off, especially if exposed to heat and fuel on it. The absolute best method is heat shrink. I have had heat shrinked connections on helicopter for years and never ever have to worry about a connection coming loose, even in sun and fuel harsh conditions.
