ok guys I am going back and forth on the motors right now. I am going to use scorpion but I am going back and forth between the -8 and the -6. I know the differences. I am just worried about getting hot packs after flying for 4 minutes.

Is anyone using the -8 motor, and how do you like it? What packs are you flying with, flight times, and how much are you putting back into the packs?

Thanks
Justin

Hi Justin !

I am using the Scorpion -8 with its Scorpion controller, my packs are 2200map.

I am not a 3D flyer as yet, just sport flying but keeping a decent rotor blade speed, probably 70% all the way. I am very happy with this version of the scorpion engine and I'am using a 12T pignon on mine.

I stop flying after about 5:30 minutes. The lipo is then slightly warm and I put back around 1300map.

After reading a lot of post over the last two days, and the last two days of flying. I prefer the 8 turn motor

Here is what I have came up with. I have both motors mounted in two Beams, everything else is the same. 2221-6 on 11 tooth and 2221-8 on 13 tooth. Both running Thunder Power 2200 Extreme V2's. My timer is set for 4:30 min I fly my routine and end at the beep on the timer. Both fly very well and feel about the same. The 6 turn has a little more head speed but boggs a little (not bad at all). The 8 turn has a little less head speed but seems to not bog at all. At the end of the flight the 6 turn motor, has the lipos at around a 130 deg and I put in around 1700-1800 mah. The 8 turn motor ends with the Lipo around 110 deg and I put around 1500-1600 mah back in the pack. All in all IMO the 8 Turn works better for me. Keep this in mind I have run the 8 turn motor for a while now and only started to run the 6 turn motor, so it take me around 10-15 flight to really decide if I like what I have changed on the heli. Really I am being nit-picky at which motor is better. Alot of the reason I prefer the 8 turn is your get about the same power and it's not as hard on the packs, so they will last a little longer.

I hope that gives you some idea about the two motors

rcman,

the temps make sense to me that the 8 with a 13t would be easier on the packs. the funny thing is that trex tuning tests show the 6 with a 11t drawing less current than 8 with a 13t.

I have just joined the beam team and have a kit on the way. I have had some problems with the thunder power extreme v2 losing power after 20 cycles in my mini titan. running a z power 3300 on a 14t.my battery temps after 4 minutes are 50f deg above ambient temp, so at 70f deg outside I hit 120f deg. I didn't think this was to high. I am thinking of trying a 4 cell on the beam and see how long the batteries will last.

I am super excited to get this new heli in the air.

Justin911,

Are you on the beam team now, if so I like to get together and fly these beams and compare setup for best performance.

Yah I know I always have a little different verdict on my test then the rest do . Also after watching most of the guys video's of the 6 turn motor flying they seem to have a pretty high head speed and I really don't hear there's bog like mine did. I guess everyone flys a little different and there collective management is different.

As for your TP packs. I really have not seen that with mine.

4S systems are pretty fun and are a little nicer to the packs for sure. I have not played to much with them for a year now. I really didn't like flying the extra weight on the little 450's size heli's.

However I am pretty interested in what they are doing with the "Outage Heli" runing it on 6s 1300's I have not see what that pack would way but that mit be fun, if we can get a low enough KV'ed motor.

Jyrorc, were the tests done at www.trextuning.com done with a Version 1 or Version 2 motor, I am not sure it that matters but it would be nice to know

thanks for the answers guys, appreciate it alot. I think I am gonna go with the -8 motor and give it a shot.

Jyrorc,
Yea I am on the team now. They got me on the site yesterday and I got the kit commin hopefully Friday or Saturday... Still need electronics tho, so it will be awhile. I'll def. like to meet up and compare. Just let me know...

Rcman,

they didn't say whether it was v1 or v2. I was thinking on the weight of the 4 cell being about the same by use a polite or evolite. I could also go to a lower capacity lipo because the current draw should be about 30% less I think.

So your tp packs have stayed pretty consistent, i have five tp packs and they are all doing the same thing. i did a 6 cycle break in(if that matters) and after that the head seemed really high with almost un bog able power for 20 cycle after that the speed has dropped a little and its much easier to bog.

I had 2 of the first extremes and they totally krapt out after 30 cycles and returned them under warranty for the v2 version. I currently have 5 v2's. on a cold day i run 1 prolite that i have and it gets about 15f deg hotter than the extremes, but has been consistent for over 60 cycles. at this point my prolite have more power the my extremes. I have even hit 150f a couple time with the prolite.
