Computer Flight Simulators > Autos on Phoenix

Hi

I've a question about autos on the phoenix sim.

I can do them for real with my eyes closed and on the sim they are quite easy (too easy?) to do. The landing however is quite sensitive. Either you land perfectly strait as you should or its going to break.

Now my question is about inverted acrobatic autos (with an ending flip). I can do them very well on Phoenix (19 in 20) but never did them for real. What worries me is that on phoenix, you either have a decent headspeed and flip it with a touch positive and then reduce a little to negative and it comes out perfect or you try to flip it at zero degrees and/or low headspeed and the result isn't pretty.

How is it for real? do you flip it just like on the sim or what?

Thx
Tony

PS - blade stop autos are REALLY easy on Phoenix... it can't be that simple in real life can it?

Tony,

The real thing is not quite as easy as the sim, I have been doing push over autos for the last several months.

The way I have been doing them is, climb to the height you want to start the auto, roll over inverted and hit TH and add pos collective and drop in nose first inverted, as I reach a height of 15 to 20 feet I add a litte neg or should I say 0 to -3 (approx.) just enough to help it push over and listen to the blade noise this will let you know if your using to much pitch, as it rolls over stay on the neg side and start feathering in pos to a smooth landing.

Its kind of hard to explain on here, the key I listen for is the blade noise, when I nail them the blade noise is very little in the roll over part, if you hear a lot of balde noise your just killing the headspeed.

One way I started doing them was to bump up the idle in TH to let let the engine help a little, that way if your to hard on the collective at first the higher idle will help you through it until you get a better feel, kind of like having training wheels.

Hope this helps
