Radio - JR & Spektrum DSM > Battery Setup Question

Hey everyone,

I've got an Airskipper 50 that is just about ready to fly. This is my radio setup (thus far): JR X9303, JR R921 rx (might go to a Spektrum AR7100R when they hit the market), 4x JR DS8717 servos (cyclic + throttle), and JR G7703D gyro with 8900G tail servo. I am curious as to what you guys would recommend as a good battery setup.... I am no hardcore pilot, and my abilities are limed to inverted hovering and tic tocs right now. So I don't need an extreme setup.

I talked to the Horizon techs about my setup (which at the time was thinking about a 6.0v battery with the Spektrum VR5203 voltage regulator for the gyro), and the guy I talked to kinda frowned on the idea of 6v! He said even though the DS8717's are made to run on 6v, he said it's still not good for the servo. I also asked him about running something like a Thunder Power 2100mah 7.4v for a battery, and he said that Thunder Power's batteries are not made to handle vibration from the gas engines, so he didn't recommend that. He just recommended running the JR 4-cell 4500mah battery. Though, I am really temped to try out the new JR Powersafe batteries...

What say yous guys?

Battery set up question

nstampede002
Here is my battery set-up.
Fromeco 7.4 volt, 5400mah lith-ion battery. I'm useing a Fromeco charger ( 12 volts required to run the charger ) and a Fromeco
"8 ball" battery checker to monitor battery voltage at the field.
Fromeco "Arizona" regulator. This regulator has adjustable voltage for all servos through the receiver ( 4.8 to 6 volt ) with a fixed voltage for the gyro and gyro servo (5.1). I had the regulator fitted with the Fromeco "Pin Switch".
Haveing tried Nicad, NMH, and lipo. I am now where I want to be as far as battery security (mah's and longevity) is concerned.:
I would not go back to any of the others.
I now have this set up on both my Raptor 50 and 90.
Hope this gives you food for thought.

Fromeco where to buy

Read the post. I have a new titan 50 coming. I also use spektrum gear. I want to use lipos as well. What website do you buy your fromeco goodies from? Also, how many flight are you comfortable with the lipo setup vs nimh? thanks Dan

Fromeco where to buy

danthemancarol
Here are some sources for the "Fromeco" products.
1.) "Fromeco Scale Avionics" (fromecoscaleavionics)
2.) "Don's Hobby Shop" (donshobbyshop)
3.) "Airwild Pilot Shop" (airwildpilotshop)
4.) "Troy Built Models" (troybuiltmodels)
As far as comfortable flights on the Li-Po and NiMH batteries.
The biggest factor is the Mah's of the battery being used.
But generally I was getting 2 maybe 3 really hard on both types.
The Lipo's are 2S2500 and the Mimh's are 2500AA.
I have always been leary of the Lipo's because of the potential fire hazard when damaged (crashed!!!)
The 5200 Ion's are giveing me 4 to 5 hard on each heli.
But I don't let the batteries get to close to the "No Fly" low voltage of 6.9 to 7 volts under a 1.5 amp load. This is a neat feature of the "8 ball"( it tells you ). They charge up to 8.4 or 8.5 volts.
I'm running;
3 Hitec 5925 dig. (pitch and cyc.)
1 hitec 5625 dig. (throttle)
Logictech LGT-6100T gyro with their LTS-6100G servo
( this gyro consumes 90 Mah )
Aerospire Multigov
"Fromeco" Arizona regulator ( 6 volts to hitec servos and 5.1 volts to the gyro and it's servo )
"Airtronics" FHSS 2.5 Ghz 8 channel receiver.
I hope this may be of some help.

thnks

Thanks Lamar, yes that helps alot. Also you mentioned in your setup a governor. Is that something else that is required? Or is that just if you use the lipo setup?

Gov. required ?

danthemancarol,
No Dan a gov. is not "required".
A gov. is a great aid in maintaining a consistant head speed in all flight modes.
The true secret to getting the most out of a gov. is to have your engine properly tuned BEFORE "turning on" the gov.
If this is your first nitro heli. You most certainly will want to break-in your engine properly and get it tuned for maximun performance.
Then install or start useing the gov., if already installed.
So the best thing you can do is to start out useing the throttle curves in the radio.
Check out "raptortechnique" and "littlerotors".
Both sites have great information relative to any nitro heli.
In particular "raptortechnique" has great information on engine tuneing and pitch set up.
Most servos run on 4.8 to 6 volt power supplys.
Just about all gyros like to run on 4.8 to 5.1 volts.
There are however set ups that will operate on 8 volts out there.
So if you run lipos. A 2 cell will be 7.4 and a 3 cell will be 11.1 volts. Also most Nmh battery packs are 5 cell 6 volt and Nicad packs are generally 4 cell 4.8 volt.
If you run anything over 6 volts you will need regulate voltage to everything.
If 6 volts you will also need to regulate the voltage to the gyro.
Sorry, my boss is demanding my attention,
Gotta run.
Hope this is some small help.
