Which is the best Simulator?

I have the Aerofly Pro Deluxe and need to know if it would be a good idea to upgrade.

Thanks for the input,

Joe

Hello BULLSEYE,

You can't go wrong with Phoenix RC! It is to me the best sim out there. I have tried many sims and to me the best one is Phoenix. Especially now with the model creator it is a lot easier to navigate rather than reflex(just in my opinion). Also now that Phoenix has released a model editor of some sort people can now edit there own model(Color schemes only for right now) for what they like to fly. Also Phoenix is fairly cheap as long as you have your own transmitter that will work you will be happy with it in the end if decide to choose Phoenix RC!

Once And For All

Heh, I doubt this thread will answer this question once and for all. Maybe for the next month or so...

Phoenix is definitely my favorite out of the ones I've tried, which are Phoenix, RealFlight 3.5, Clearview, FMS, Heli-X, and HeliFlightSimRC. It's got the most realistic feel, easy setup, and looks great. RealFlight has more features, but most of the extra features are things I don't care about, so Phoenix wins on realism and looks.

I've tried Phoenix and RealFlight G3.5 and much prefer Phoenix, though the tutorials are better in RealFlight.

IMHO,
G4 is the best for feel......unless you don't have a fast enough machine to run it on......then Phoenix would be my second choice. They are both close on graphics. G4 wins again for sounds(especially the blade sounds). And yes....I've tried them both on the same machine to compare.
G4 is a lot more 'tweak-able' as well if you like to have the options. For many people, probably overkill, but there is a setting there most things you could think of down to such things as setting the speed on individual servos to see what the overall effect is on the feel of the heli.
I also own XTR, but they need to have a meaningful update to catch up with the rest of the pack. It's gathered dust since I got G4.

For most people with standard PCs ( not 'gaming' machines ) or laptops, Phoenix is probably your safe bet.

Hard choice between G4 and Phoenix. G4 seems to have a better representation of the models stability in slow flight and hover. It acts more like a real model where Phoenix is very locked in. On G4 I noticed when doing fast forward flight and allowing the nose to level out the helis sky rocket. This does not happen on my actual models or in Phoenix. Maybe a patch has fixed this I did not register it so I could sell it after reviewing.

Sounds and 3D fields go to G4 for sure. Graphics to either but if you consider the 3D fields I give that to G4 as well. If I had not already had Phoenix I probably would have opted for G4. The availablity of helis on Phoenix helped me with that decision. I had to search for helis I wanted and thats with 2 expansion packs installed with G4.

Widowmaker, have you tried adjusting the Hover Stability attribute under the simulation > edit aircraft > main rotor menu? This makes things alot more interesting!

Another point you must take into account is by default there is absolutely no wind or turbulence in Phoenix. In these conditions your helicopter will be incredibly stable and "locked in" during hover and slow flight.

Adding wind and turbulence to the levels at your local field has a very large effect on the stability of the model.

Yes I have but it still does not mimic real instability very well. The instability it adds is predictable, more like you have to much trim in one direction.

What Im referring to as locked in is like doing a tic toc.. the heli stops way to accurate for my skills. You will see that type of accuracy in a skilled pilot but I have yet to fly a heli I can make stop like that every time as I can on Phoenix. Its also much easier to keep the heli from falling out of tic tocs on Phoenix.

Widowmaker,

I agree with you. That's why I didn't like the feel of Phoenix....too 'locked in' makes the manoeuvers too easy...even after adding wind.
One quirk in G4 when you first install it is that the physics level for helis defaults to medium. You need to change that to high to make it feel right.
The climbing in FFF in G4 I think is more of a model setting. I have a Stratus model that does that a bit, but my Aurora model doesn't at all. I have found that after the last patches, it does it less now even on the Stratus.......quite realistic I think.

Yes I changed that to high immediately when setting up the first time. I have no problem with G4 on the manuevers and slow flight, just the balooning effect in forward flight. I will probably switch over the G4 later but only after I find some worthy models for download. It sucks to have the Sim and two addons and still not have the most popular helis.

I have owned and extensively used:

Aerofly Pro Deluxe
Reflex
G2
G3.5
Phoenix

Aerofly wins hands down for fixed wing.
Phoenix for graphics
Reflex for realistic flight
G3 too "gamey"

I agree with the locked in feel comment. I am not able to maintain tic-toc altitude in real life with a 600n like I can in Phoenix. Tic-tocs in Reflex are far more accurate with my level right now.
With that said, I believe Phoenix...with the right tweak can match this but I have yet to find it.

Have not tried G4 yet.

slo_dave, try reducing the lift a touch using the fine tuning menu or the cyclic responses - your real-life model may not be quite as powerful as the one in Phoenix, and this will keep the model up during tic-tocs.

Phoenix all the way. I learnt on the sim & within 20 hours of sim time I was doing this:-

A few weeks later & was doing this:-

Now if that's anything to go by, then Phoemix gets my FULL approval.

Phoenix here!..., I just got really tired of RealFlights marketing practices of having to pay extra for the add-ons, and expansion packs!, plus I had to turn off most features for it to run half way decent...., Im glad I switched to Phoenix!, I will never look back!...
