Check out this main gear wear.

This is less than 1 gal. I have been fighting this OS61 this year, so I have not been able to fly with it much yet.

I have just been doing hover tests, and alot of spool ups. I think I found the prob. with the motor and I was moving the throt. servo today (bad weather) then I saw this.

Well what do you guys think? My used Pantera gear did not show this much wear last year and I did 3 good crashes with a light chicken dance and a big chicken dance (I think I will rember the THold now, been messing with the sim. a bunch).

Thanks for the photos. you have a awsome camera. The dust is normal as the gears mesh. I must say more then I have ever noticed. The chicken dance will wear gears and everything in your ship. How is it flying? any slop in the gear train?

My name is Billm. Cough, and I'm a Heli Holic

That's too much gear dust, somethings's wrong, but have you contacted us about this and received an inadequate response? I really don't recall you asking me for help, and apologize if I haven't answered a request for assistance.

Anyway, I'm the guy who can help so call me tomorrow and let's work together. I not only can help you evaluate what you're seeing, but if there's an issue, come up with a solution. For example, you mention struggling with a 61 in your Pantera. From experience I know this isn't an issue in what you're seeing, but I may be able to help with the engine as well. Why? Precisely because of our experience with these big block engines when installed in our helicopters. So asking my help results in a twofer! I.e. help in evaluating the gear as well as possibly helping with your engine.

Remember folks, about the only advantage we have against the giant companies we compete against is our good customer service, so please give us a chance to help first.

Regards,

When this bird was new a few months ago, it had a semi-tight mesh, after 3 flights it was smooth as silk. I have actually wiped off the dust once B4, I just thought it looked cool so I wanted to get a pic.

As for slop in the gears, I have a bunch right now (pinion and main only), this gear has not done a chicken dance also. As far as the 61 one flight it will run super rich and cool, then the next flight it will run so hot it will flame out without changing anything. I started finding alot of fresh fuel on the back plate so I think I just have a vacuum leak on my backplate. It ran good last year.

John I will give you a call later today. I have never asked you about this B4 so that is why you do not rember it.

I thought only Bill was still flying in the snow!

Possibility #1
My bet is the engine is in there cocked forcing the pinion to mesh with the main gear on an angle and thereby grinding a new angled pitch into the plastic gear which is making it snow inside your heli.

Possibility #2
Are your pinion teeth real sharp? In the picture it almost looks like they are large rounded teeth. THAT would never mesh properly with the main gear and would also make some snow.

Here is some more pics. I just emailed John. The first pic. left gear is last year, 2nd pic. bottom is last year. The motor mounts are 5/16 stock. Holes were centered on one side and a little off on the other side, they were real close to what the 50 mount holes were.

Everthing is new this year other than the motor.

TDriver are you getting any probs. with your main gear, you have the same set up I have.

I will check out the alignment better later today. Gotta run now.

EDIT: John is sending me some parts to get her fixed up. I guess that will take care of that.

THANKS John
