RJX Hobby Hurrican 50 - Xtreme 50 > Spartan DS760 Gyro - Drifting like a 4-wheel drive rally car!!!!

So the gyro is really great in piros, and it stops on a dime. But I found out that mine is drifting horribly today.

I was in an inverted hover on the deck, and the tail was drifting quickly requiring lots of corrections. I flipped her over, and put her into a standard tail in hover. The nose was drifting horribly to the left.

Badraptor was with me and recommended I put her into a hover, and then without touching the left rudder stick, to use my aileron to move the heli left and right. Holy cow did that open my eyes! When I went right and then brought her back in front of me, the tail had drifted 45 degrees counterclockwise (nose left) to where I started! This was horrible!

I noticed the same thing with multiple flips today. After about 5 flips or so, she was 90 degrees to where I started!!!

My 401 holds better than this!!!!

So what can I do to stop the drifting??? Is there anything I can do without the advanced menu??? Is there even something to adjust for drifting in the advanced menu???

God I hope so, this was a huge letdown today!!!

Do you have a velcro strap around the 760? I added a small velcro strap to mine and had a very noticeable drift today. I landed, removed the velcro strap and the drift went away.

You can also go back through the quick set up routine. This often helps if you notice the gyro not working properly. I used to have that problem with my CSM 720. As soon as I went through the quick set up, everything was fine again.

To hover is divine, the alternative is rather PLANE.

Didn't use a strap.

I'll try going through the quick setup routine and rebinding...

We had a guy at the feild today with one of those and it was doing the same thing on zeal tape and no strap,I believe he said he tried all to get it right and just gave up.We did not have a PC at the feild so his flying ended early.I believe it was Greg or or Tom somthing with the Rappy 50.

We just set one up on Steven's Outrage G5 on Friday, the biggest thing is to set it up out of heading hold, mechanically set it up to hover first, his locked right in and was awesome all weekend.

Hi,

Where did you place your gyro (front plate or rear plate) ? and which gyro servo are you using ?

In case of front plate usage for gyro, and depending of servo used, you can get high RF disturbance from the servo to the gyro as they're too close from each other.
For your info, i made exactly same experience with L6100T and had to place it at the rear location. Untill then. no trouble at all, it works like hell.

Hope this help.

Bruno

Unless Rock has moved it, the pics he posted show the Sparten mounted in the rear on the gyro plate. It also looks from the pic with the 4 bladed horn that he is using a Futaba servo, not sure which one

Clyde is right!

It is on the rear plate, and from my lessons learned from Curtis Youngblood himself for my Solid-G, instead of wiring inside the heli and between servos, I wired outside away from everything to avoid EMI interference issues.

Check for subtrim? Some times I find some in an old program. The CSM gyros would drive me nuts with any little bit of subtrim.

Start from initial set up forward. Reset it up in normal, trim from the radio to get where the tail doesn't drift, then dial it out mechanically, then put it into heading hold and try it out.

Check for subtrim?

Checked subtrim and trim. All at zero.

First I'm going to attack the engine/clutch again and try dial indicating it with a new fan hub that I got.

Second I'm going to set up the gyro again and re-bind again.

Hope that works.

Rockohaulic i have exactly the same problem as you, i have a futaba s9254 servo ,the spartan is mounted on the rear gyro mount on a trex 600n and my tail drifts to the right (nose to the left) and it some times swops ends and like you i think my 401 was better . i am changing my main bearings incase it is vibration but again like you i dont really know what to do.

I have the been flying the Spartan DS760 with a 9254 on my Xtreme 50 since March. Drift is almost always caused by excessive vibration. Is your fuel tank foaming when you're hovering? Do you see any noticeable vibration in the tail or landing gear? How do you have it mounted?

I have mine mounted with the supplied tape and the metal plate. Ensure that there are no excessive vibes in your heli. Also make sure that everything is moving smooth and that there is no binding anywhere in the tail set up.
