Compass Knight 50 > Knight 3D harmonic

HI got the knight 3D a while back and noticed that it had a harmonic sound coming from it, mainly in the hover.
So i changed a few things like the spindle to the new 8mm shaft, the belt to the new stile one. I got rid of a bit of play in the tail gear box with a shim but i have sill got the same problem.
I was just wondering of anyone has had this problem and knows where its coming from.

You sure it is not coming from the belt? This machine has the belt going around the bottom gear so it will have a little more harmonic sound than just gear driven.

As i said i don't think its the belt because ive tried the old and new belt and the sound has stayed the same.
I know they make more noise than a gear driven tail but i have seen quite a few knight 3D's fly and mine is louder than any other one ive seen.

Is the main gear a white one, or black? I remember someone posted that the black ones make more noise than the white gears.

Harmonic

could be:

starter shaft bearings
rear engine bearing
loose canopy/canopy mount

OK thanks for that. I think i will take a look at the starter shaft bearings. also i noticed when i changed the feathering shaft to the 8mm version i got a violent wobble at the end of an auto is this normal?

Well here is my two cents worth.
I had what i belive was the same problem found to be the Engine bearings. as you can read in this thread...

What is funny is this is the only heli I own that lets me know when its time to change the bearings. LOL

OK thanks for that everyone. I doesn't seem to dent the heli's performance its just really annoying. I will take a look at it over the weekend.

Hi i spoke to a friend and he thinks its the engine bearings too so i ordered some ceramic ones as you said from RC bearings but they haven't come through the post yet. I will keep you posted on what happens.

I forgot that I mentioned I ordered Ceramic bearings. Yea, well give them a try. Let me know what you think (curious) what i found out is that ceramic, stainless steel,or standard steel all ware the same. I found that it didn't matter. The barring's will all go out eventually. So found that just Standard steel is the best, there cheep And last as long as all the others. At App. 7-10 GAl of fuel(had stainless only last about 2 gal of fuel)
I sure that some one will oppose me, but I do know that this hyper bearing thing is hit and miss. Two guys that I fly with have never changed there bearings. but this is what i found and know...
Best of luck
please keep me up to date thanks

Noise

We had a sport kit that had a strange noise while flying. I dropped the engine and main gear and starter shaft bearing group. I found starter shaft bearings were shot and the unit that the main one way bearing rides on had been marred from the one way bearing engaging suddenly. It looked like a washboard where the one way needles would bite into the metal. This is that little sleeve that slides inside the one way bearing and attaches to the main gears. We replaced it an all was well again.

Interesting. I wonder if the truth is, that we all say that we change something that requires the engine to be removed. And what is really happening is were adjusting how the engine sits and the gear mesh?

Gear Mesh

Nope, don't think that is the issue. Trust me, when we pulled that one way sleeve, it was obvious that the noise was generated there. Silky smooth again after a quick swap.

the knight tail does make a little bit more noise than other helis as the tail is 4.8:1 so runs a bit faster. That combined with the belt it can hum.

this hum will get louder if the tail hub is bent.

Hi thanks for the info gies. Went flying today and before i hovered i took the canopy off and i think the sound went away or maybe its just that the canopy is just amplifying the sound its difficult to tell i mite change the rubbers to see if it cures the problem
